She Found a Stranger Sleeping in Her Garage… Then Discovered Who He Really Was

Chapter 9

They returned to Emma’s house before midnight.

The hidden room was exactly as they had left it.

Emma locked every door.

Then she spread the documents across the dining table.

Daniel read Michael’s notes again.

“Samuel was pretending to be the seventh,” he said.

Emma nodded.

“Why?”

“To protect the real person.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked at the list.

“I don’t know.”

Emma remembered Rachel.

“She said the seventh person could prove everything.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Maybe that’s why my father kept searching.”

Emma opened the metal box again.

At the bottom was an old envelope.

She hadn’t noticed it before.

Inside was a key and a note.

For Emma, when she is old enough to understand.

Emma’s breath caught.

Her grandmother had written it.

She unfolded the paper.

“If you are reading this, then the past has found you.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you everything. But every truth has a price, and I was afraid you would pay mine.”

Daniel remained silent.

“Samuel was not involved in the corruption. He helped expose it. Michael helped him. But there was another person who helped us.”

Emma continued.

“Someone inside the Seven gave us information. He never wanted money. He wanted his family protected.”

Daniel whispered:

“Who?”

Emma read the next line.

“His name was Daniel.”

She froze.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

Emma stared at him.

“The note says Daniel.”

His face went pale.

“That’s impossible.”

She read further.

“Not your Daniel. His father named him after the man who helped us.”

Daniel slowly sat down.

“My father knew him?”

Emma nodded.

“Apparently.”

The note continued.

“The man who helped us was the son of one of the Seven. He betrayed his own family.”

Daniel whispered:

“Jonathan Harrow.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

“But Jonathan died in a car accident.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Maybe he didn’t.”

Silence.

They searched old newspapers.

Jonathan Harrow had supposedly died in a crash on Interstate 70.

But there was no body photograph.

No funeral details.

No public autopsy.

The accident report listed the vehicle as severely burned.

The identification had supposedly been made through dental records.

Emma looked at Daniel.

“What if he survived?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Then he’d be the seventh.”

Emma felt a chill.

“Why would he help your father?”

“Because he knew what his family was doing.”

They searched for Jonathan’s name.

Nothing after the accident.

Then Emma remembered something.

“Your father was looking for the seventh person.”

Daniel nodded.

“Maybe he wasn’t looking for him.”

Emma looked at the old key.

“Maybe he was hiding him.”

The key had a number engraved on it.

214.

Daniel stared.

“That’s a locker number.”

“Where?”

He thought.

“Union Station.”

They drove there before dawn.

The old station had been renovated into offices, but the basement still contained storage lockers.

A security employee checked the number.

Locker 214 hadn’t been opened in seventeen years.

Emma inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a small suitcase.

Daniel opened it.

There were clothes.

A passport.

A photograph.

And a handwritten letter.

The passport belonged to a man named Jonathan Carter.

Not Harrow.

Carter.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

A younger Jonathan Harrow stood beside Michael Reed.

Emma looked at the date.

Three months after the supposed accident.

Jonathan had survived.

He had changed his name.

And he had disappeared.

The letter was addressed to Michael.

“If you’re reading this, I finally understand what my family has become.”

Daniel read aloud.

“I can’t undo what they did. But I can help you expose it.”

Emma held her breath.

Then came the final paragraph.

“There is only one problem. My father knows where the original recordings are.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“Where?”

He turned the page.

The answer was written in one sentence.

“Inside the Harrow family vault.”

Emma’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man’s voice whispered:

“You’re looking in the wrong place.”

Emma froze.

“Who is this?”

The caller said:

“Your grandmother never wanted you to find the recordings.”

“Why?”

A pause.

“Because they contain the name of the person who ordered Samuel Carter’s death.”

The call ended.

Emma stared at the phone.

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

“My grandfather was murdered?”

Emma nodded.

And suddenly the story they had been uncovering wasn’t about stolen money anymore.

It was about murder.
