She Found a Stranger Sleeping in Her Garage… Then Discovered Who He Really Was

Chapter 11

Emma couldn’t speak.

“My grandfather?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Samuel discovered that someone was secretly selling information to Harrow Industrial.”

“Who?”

Jonathan looked at her.

“Your grandmother.”

Emma’s face went white.

“No.”

“She wasn’t corrupt.”

“Then why?”

“Because she was trying to protect Michael.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Jonathan sat down.

“In 2004, Samuel realized the Seven knew Michael was still alive.”

“So he tried to protect him.”

“Yes.”

“And Margaret?”

“She made a deal.”

Emma shook her head.

“What kind of deal?”

“She agreed to give them false information.”

Jonathan explained that Margaret told the Seven Samuel had hidden the evidence at a location in Pennsylvania.

It was a trap.

She intended to lead them away from Michael.

But someone discovered the deception.

Samuel confronted Margaret.

They argued.

Then Samuel suffered a heart attack.

Emma stared.

“You said he wasn’t murdered.”

“He wasn’t.”

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

“But the stress was caused by what happened.”

Emma remembered her grandmother’s grief.

For years, Margaret had blamed herself for Samuel’s death.

Jonathan continued.

“She never told you because she believed you deserved a normal life.”

Daniel asked:

“What about my father?”

“Michael left the country temporarily.”

“Alaska?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he contact me?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Because someone was threatening your mother.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“She knew?”

“She knew enough.”

Emma asked:

“Who was the seventh?”

Jonathan smiled sadly.

“You still don’t understand.”

He pointed to the list.

“The Seven were never seven people.”

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“They were seven families.”

Silence.

Jonathan explained that the names on the list represented family lines, not individuals.

The Harrows.

The Bennetts.

The Whitakers.

The Shaws.

The Pikes.

The Carters.

And one more.

Emma stared.

“Then who is the seventh family?”

Jonathan looked at Daniel.

“The Reeds.”

Daniel shook his head.

“My father?”

“Your family was forced into the group because Michael’s father had once worked for them.”

“But he betrayed them.”

“Eventually.”

Jonathan handed Emma a flash drive.

“The recordings are here.”

Emma stared.

“Where did you get them?”

“Michael gave them to me.”

“Why didn’t you release them?”

“Because the recordings contain more than financial crimes.”

Jonathan looked at Daniel.

“They reveal who ordered the disappearance of Michael’s mother.”

Daniel went still.

“My grandmother?”

Jonathan nodded.

“She was threatened.”

Emma looked at the drive.

“Who ordered it?”

Jonathan didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Play the recordings.”

Laura connected the drive to her laptop.

A voice filled the cabin.

Richard Harrow.

Young.

Angry.

Then another voice.

A woman.

Emma recognized it immediately.

Margaret.

But she sounded frightened.

The recording captured an argument.

Richard demanded the original documents.

Margaret refused.

Then a third voice appeared.

Samuel.

He told them he had already sent copies to federal investigators.

Richard threatened him.

Then another voice spoke.

A voice Emma had heard many times growing up.

Her grandmother.

But this wasn’t Margaret.

It was her grandfather.

Samuel.

He said:

“If you touch my family, I’ll expose every one of you.”

Then came a sentence that made Emma’s blood run cold.

A different man said:

“You don’t understand, Samuel. You’re already one of us.”

The recording ended.

Daniel stared at Emma.

“What does that mean?”

Jonathan looked toward the window.

“It means Samuel had a secret.”

“What secret?”

Jonathan hesitated.

Then he said:

“Samuel wasn’t protecting Michael.”

He looked at Emma.

“He was Michael’s biological father.”

Daniel’s face went blank.

“What?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Your father wasn’t a Reed.”

Emma felt the entire story shift beneath her feet.

“Then who was he?”

Jonathan answered:

“Samuel Carter.”
