She Found a Stranger Sleeping in Her Garage… Then Discovered Who He Really Was

Chapter 7

Rachel refused to say the names immediately.

Instead, she made coffee.

Her hands shook while she poured it.

Emma noticed.

“You’ve been afraid for a long time.”

Rachel gave a tired smile.

“Fear becomes a habit.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“Tell me about my father.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Your father wasn’t a hero.”

Daniel seemed surprised.

“He made mistakes. He trusted people he shouldn’t have. He believed numbers could expose the truth.”

She looked down.

“But he also knew when to stop trusting.”

“What happened?”

Rachel took a breath.

“In 2003, Michael discovered that pension money was being moved through shell companies.”

“How much?”

“At least forty million dollars.”

Daniel stared.

Rachel continued.

“But the money wasn’t the worst part.”

“What was?”

“The shell companies were buying properties.”

Emma leaned forward.

“Riverside.”

Rachel nodded.

“The plan was to force people out, buy their homes cheaply, then sell the land once the new development was approved.”

Emma frowned.

“That sounds like corruption.”

“It was more than corruption.”

Rachel lowered her voice.

“Seven people coordinated it.”

“Who?”

Rachel finally opened an old folder.

Inside was a handwritten list.

Emma expected names.

Instead, she saw initials.

R.H.

J.H.

C.B.

T.W.

M.S.

E.P.

And one name written fully:

Margaret Carter.

Daniel stood.

“My grandmother?”

Rachel shook her head.

“Not as one of them.”

She pointed at the name.

“She was marked as an obstacle.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“Because she had the evidence.”

Daniel looked at the initials.

“Who are these people?”

Rachel explained.

R.H. was Richard Harrow.

J.H. was his son Jonathan.

C.B. was Charles Bennett, a local judge.

T.W. was Thomas Whitaker, a bank executive.

M.S. was Martin Shaw, the city planning director.

E.P. was Edward Pike, the police chief.

The seventh name had been deliberately blacked out.

Emma stared.

“Who was the seventh?”

Rachel shook her head.

“My mother never knew.”

Daniel pointed at the list.

“What did they do to my father?”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“They didn’t kill him.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

“What?”

“He was forced to disappear.”

“Where?”

“West Virginia.”

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

“Because someone helped him escape.”

“Who?”

Rachel looked at Emma.

“Your grandmother.”

Emma’s heart pounded.

“How?”

“Margaret knew the original list had been copied.”

Rachel explained that Michael had given Margaret the evidence shortly before he disappeared.

Margaret hid it.

Then she helped Michael leave town.

But Michael couldn’t remain with his family.

He believed the Seven were watching them.

“So he stayed away to protect them,” Daniel whispered.

Rachel nodded.

“He sent money secretly.”

“Why didn’t he come back?”

Rachel looked at him.

“Because the person protecting him died.”

“Who?”

Rachel didn’t answer.

Instead, she handed Daniel another photograph.

It showed Michael standing beside an older man outside a small cabin.

On the back:

Safe for now.

Daniel stared.

“Where is this?”

“West Virginia.”

“Does he still live there?”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

“Then where?”

“I don’t know.”

Emma noticed another detail.

The photograph was dated 2012.

That meant Michael had been alive at least nine years after his disappearance.

Maybe longer.

Then Rachel said something that changed everything.

“Your father wasn’t hiding from the Seven anymore.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Then what was he doing?”

“Looking for the seventh person.”

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

Rachel’s face became pale.

“Because the seventh person was the only one who could prove everything.”

“Who was it?”

Rachel looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.”

She paused.

“But I know where your grandmother hid the final clue.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“Where?”

Rachel pointed toward Daniel.

“His father’s old workshop.”

Emma shook her head.

“He doesn’t have one.”

Rachel smiled sadly.

“Not anymore.”

Then she handed Emma a folded map.

“The workshop was demolished years ago.”

Daniel stared at the map.

“What’s left?”

Rachel answered:

“Only the foundation.”
