She Found a Stranger Sleeping in Her Garage… Then Discovered Who He Really Was

Chapter 12

Daniel walked outside.

Emma followed.

Snow fell lightly around them.

He stood beside the cabin, staring into the forest.

“My whole life…”

His voice broke.

“My father wasn’t who I thought he was.”

Emma stood beside him.

“That doesn’t change who he is to you.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Doesn’t it?”

“No.”

“He lied to me.”

“He was trying to protect you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Emma didn’t answer.

Because she understood.

Sometimes protection was another word for silence.

They returned to the cabin.

Jonathan explained everything.

Michael Reed had been raised under his mother’s surname.

Samuel had never publicly acknowledged him because the truth could have exposed an affair that would have destroyed both families.

But Samuel had always protected Michael.

When Michael discovered the pension scheme, Samuel helped him gather evidence.

Margaret helped them both.

The family secret became intertwined with the corporate crime.

And when the Seven discovered the truth, they threatened everyone.

Daniel sat quietly.

“Where is my father?”

Jonathan gave him an address.

A small town in Alaska.

“He has lived there for eleven years.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“I have to go.”

She nodded.

“So do I.”

Laura objected.

“This is dangerous.”

Emma looked at her.

“So was sleeping in my garage.”

They booked flights.

Before leaving, Jonathan gave Emma one final envelope.

“For you.”

Inside was a letter from Margaret.

Emma recognized her handwriting.

“Emma, if you ever find this, I failed at keeping the past away from you.”

She continued:

“But I never failed at loving you.”

Emma wiped away a tear.

“You will eventually learn that families are not defined only by blood. They are defined by who stands beside you when standing beside you costs something.”

At the bottom was one final sentence.

“If Daniel ever comes looking, help him find his father.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Her grandmother had known.

She had known that one day Daniel would arrive.

Maybe she had even expected it.

The next morning, Emma and Daniel flew north.

They found Michael in a small cabin near the coast.

He was seventy years old.

His hair was white.

His shoulders were bent.

But the moment he saw Daniel, he knew.

Neither man spoke.

Daniel walked toward him.

Michael’s eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel stopped.

“For what?”

“For every birthday.”

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“For every Christmas.”

Michael nodded.

“For every time you thought I didn’t love you.”

Daniel stepped forward.

Then he hugged him.

They stood that way for a long time.

Emma watched from the doorway.

Michael eventually looked at her.

“You’re Margaret’s granddaughter.”

Emma nodded.

He smiled.

“She kept her promise.”

“What promise?”

“She told me she’d protect you.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

Michael reached into a drawer.

He pulled out a small recorder.

“The final recording.”

Emma stared.

“I thought Jonathan had everything.”

“He did.”

Michael shook his head.

“But he didn’t have this.”

He pressed play.

Richard Harrow’s voice filled the room.

“If Samuel talks, we lose everything.”

Another man answered.

“Then make sure he doesn’t talk.”

Michael stopped the recording.

“The man who ordered it wasn’t Richard.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Who was it?”

Michael handed him the recorder.

“The man who controlled the banks.”

Emma felt a chill.

“Thomas Whitaker.”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

He looked directly at Emma.

“It was someone much closer to your family.”

Emma froze.

“Who?”

Michael whispered:

“Your grandmother’s brother.”

Emma had never known Margaret had a brother.

Michael continued.

“His name was David Carter.”
