We returned to the estate.
Samuel was gone.
The hospital room was empty.
Security footage showed him leaving with someone.

Olivia was furious.
“I trusted him.”
“So did your father.”
She stared at me.
“You still trust me?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you keep trying to protect people who hurt you.”
“That sounds like a bad reason.”
“Probably.”
She laughed.
It was the first real laugh she’d had all day.
Then she saw the ring in my hand.
“You kept it.”
“I forgot to give it back.”
She took it.
Our fingers touched.

Then Daniel appeared.
Olivia froze.
“Daniel?”
He looked exhausted.
“I need to explain.”
She stepped backward.

“You said you didn’t love me.”
“I lied.”
She stared.

“My father was already dead.”
“He threatened your mother.”
Olivia’s face went pale.
“My mother?”
Daniel nodded.
“Gabriel had people following her.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew where the trust was.”
I looked at him.
“And Samuel?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Samuel works for Gabriel.”
Olivia gasped.
“Then why did he say my father trusted Ethan’s father?”
“Because that part is true.”
He looked at me.
“Your father and Ethan’s father created the trust together.”
I frowned.
“Then why didn’t my father tell us?”
“Because they wanted Olivia to have a normal life.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She was never supposed to know.”
Olivia wiped her eyes.
“You ruined my life.”
“I know.”
“You could have told me.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Twice.”
She stared.
“I never got anything.”
“Because Gabriel intercepted the letters.”
I felt a chill.
“So someone controlled everything.”
Daniel nodded.
“And now he knows about the ring.”
“Why does he care?”
“Because the ring points to the original trust.”
I frowned.
“Samuel said it was a warning.”
Daniel looked at me.
“He lied.”
Olivia stared.
“What is it really?”
Daniel answered:

He explained the inscription.

Olivia stared.

We drove through the night.

And a letter from Thomas Hart.
Olivia opened it.

She began crying.
