Released at 24, She Went Back to Her Father’s Old Body Shop — Under the Lift Sat a Welded Trunk

Chapter 12

Claire reached the hospital that night.

The woman was thirty years old now.

Her name was Lily Harper.

She remembered Thomas.

She remembered Claire.

But she remembered something else.

Victor.

Lily told them she had been transported between several properties.

She had eventually escaped.

Before leaving, Thomas had promised to find her.

“He told me someone would come for me,” Lily said.

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“My father.”

Lily nodded.

“He said your father was the bravest man he ever knew.”

Claire couldn’t speak.

Then Lily revealed something else.

“Victor wasn’t alone.”

Claire’s heart sank.

“Who helped him?”

Lily looked toward the door.

“Your brother.”

Daniel.

Claire couldn’t believe it.

But Lily explained.

Daniel had initially helped Victor.

He had been young.

Scared.

And deeply involved.

Later, he tried to escape.

Victor threatened Claire.

Daniel became trapped.

That’s why he had helped frame Claire.

Not because he wanted her imprisoned.

Because Victor had threatened to kill her.

Claire understood.

But forgiveness would take time.

Daniel eventually confessed everything.

His testimony gave federal investigators enough evidence to begin dismantling Victor’s network.

Weeks later, Victor was arrested.

Rachel testified.

Sheriff Reed testified.

Daniel testified.

And Claire finally learned the truth about her father.

He hadn’t been perfect.

He had made terrible mistakes.

But he had spent the final years of his life trying to undo them.

Claire returned to the body shop.

For the first time, she opened every room.

Every drawer.

Every locked cabinet.

Then she found something unexpected.

A letter.

Not from her father.

From her mother.

Her mother had died when Claire was twelve.

The letter was dated three days before her death.

Claire opened it.

The first sentence made her cry.

Your father is not the man you think he is.

But the final sentence was worse.

And neither am I.
