Released at 24, She Went Back to Her Father’s Old Body Shop — Under the Lift Sat a Welded Trunk
Chapter 14
The man entered without knocking.
His name was Arthur Whitmore.
For decades, he had been one of the most respected businessmen in Ohio.
He looked at Claire.
“I wondered when you’d find it.”
Claire held the photograph.
“You’re The Architect.”
Arthur smiled.
“That name makes it sound more dramatic than it was.”
Reed reached for his weapon.
Arthur didn’t react.
“Sheriff, if I wanted you dead, you’d already be dead.”
Claire stepped forward.
“Why?”
“Money.”
“You destroyed families.”
“I built an organization.”
“You killed my father.”
Arthur’s smile disappeared.
“Your father was going to expose everything.”
“He was trying to save people.”
“He was trying to destroy an empire.”
Claire felt rage rising.
“You framed me.”
“Yes.”
The admission was effortless.
“Why?”
“Because you inherited the property.”
Claire stared.
Arthur explained that the body shop contained evidence capable of destroying dozens of powerful people.
Her father had hidden it.
Arthur needed someone to take the blame.
Claire was perfect.
Young.
Angry.
And already arguing with her father.
“You sacrificed six years of my life.”
Arthur nodded.
“Unfortunately.”
Claire looked at him.
“Unfortunately?”
Arthur shrugged.
“Business requires sacrifices.”
She picked up the recorder.
Arthur’s expression changed.
“You’re being recorded.”
“So?”
“Everything you’ve just said will go to federal investigators.”
Arthur laughed.
“You think I came here without knowing that?”
The door behind him opened.
Federal agents entered.
Arthur’s smile disappeared.
Reed had contacted them earlier.
Claire hadn’t known.
Arthur looked at her.
“You planned this.”
“No.”
Claire smiled.
“My father did.”
She pointed toward the hidden camera.
Arthur looked around.
Then understood.
The entire conversation had been recorded.
For the first time, the powerful man looked afraid.
He was arrested that night.
And the empire he had built collapsed within months.
