My Wife Took A Phone Call During Dinner And Forgot I Speak Spanish

Chapter 12

The woman in the photograph was named Evelyn Hart.

She had been Meridian’s original founder.

Daniel’s grandfather’s business partner.

And Sophia’s mother.

Daniel stared at the file.

“Your mother?”

Sophia nodded.

“I thought she died.”

“She disappeared.”

The connection was overwhelming.

Meridian wasn’t just a family business.

It was a legacy.

Sophia’s family had built it with Daniel’s family.

Then the corruption began.

Evelyn wanted control.

Daniel’s grandfather resisted.

Their children inherited the conflict.

Michael continued it.

Sophia tried to stop it.

Daniel finally understood why Sophia had known so much.

It was in her blood.

But there was one thing she hadn’t known.

Evelyn was still alive.

They found her living in a remote coastal town.

She agreed to meet Daniel.

She looked old.

Tired.

But sharp.

“You look like your father.”

Daniel sat across from her.

“Why did you build Meridian?”

“To make money.”

“And then?”

“Power.”

“Why destroy people?”

“Because power changes people.”

Daniel stared.

“Did you kill my father?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

She shook her head.

“Michael.”

Daniel froze.

“He arranged the accident.”

Evelyn explained.

Michael had wanted control of the trust.

He had sabotaged the brakes on Daniel’s father’s car.

But the accident had not killed him immediately.

His father survived long enough to create the final archive.

He hid it.

Then Michael staged his death.

Daniel’s father had been alive for three months after the accident.

“Where?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“An old clinic.”

Daniel felt dizzy.

“Why wasn’t I told?”

“You were a child.”

“I’m forty now.”

“Yes.”

“Where is the archive?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Inside the house where you grew up.”

Daniel returned home.

He searched his childhood bedroom.

Old toys.

Books.

Photographs.

Then he found a loose floorboard beneath his bed.

Inside was a small metal box.

His father’s final letter was there.

Daniel opened it.

My son,

I failed to protect you from the world I created.

But I did protect one thing.

Your future.

Daniel cried.

The letter explained everything.

The trust.

Meridian.

Michael.

Sophia.

Victor.

Isabella.

And one final instruction.

Never allow wealth to decide who you become.

Daniel folded the letter.

Sophia stood beside him.

She was crying too.

“I never saw that.”

“I believe you.”

He looked at her.

“My father trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew I loved you.”

Daniel took her hand.

For the first time in months, they felt like a team again.

But then they heard Isabella call from downstairs.

“Dad!”

Daniel and Sophia ran.

Isabella stood at the front door.

A man was waiting outside.

Victor.

“What happened?”

Victor looked serious.

“The investigation found one missing account.”

“Whose?”

“Your father’s.”

Daniel frowned.

“How much?”

Victor whispered:

“Five hundred million dollars.”

Daniel stared.

“Where is it?”

Victor pointed toward the ocean.

“Transferred to an offshore account.”

“Whose?”

Victor’s face hardened.

“Evelyn Hart.”

Daniel froze.

Evelyn had lied.

She wasn’t just protecting the past.

She was still connected to the money.

Sophia looked at Daniel.

“What do we do?”

Daniel said:

“We find out why.”
