My Husband Slapped Me At The Hospital… Then My Father Did Something Nobody Expected. Chapt
Chapter 4
Emily did not sleep that night.
She sat in the hospital waiting room until sunrise, staring at the city through the glass windows.
Chicago looked strangely peaceful from the twentieth floor.
Cars moved through the streets.
Buildings glowed under the first light.
People walked to work.
Nobody knew that Emily’s entire life had changed in a single evening.
At 7:15 a.m., her phone rang.
Ryan.
She stared at the screen.
She almost answered.
Then she remembered the note.
She let it ring.
A minute later, another call came.
Then another.
Finally, a message appeared.
I’m sorry. I lost control. Please come home.
Emily stared at the words.
She had heard apologies from Ryan before.
After arguments.
After insults.
After moments when he made her feel small.
But she had always forgiven him.
This time she couldn’t.
Daniel found her twenty minutes later.
“Your father is asking for you.”
Emily followed him into the room.
Thomas looked slightly stronger.
The doctor had told them he was responding well to treatment.
But there was still concern.
“Dad?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Sit.”
She did.
“I need to tell you something.”
Emily braced herself.
Thomas reached beneath his pillow.
He pulled out a small metal key.
“What is this?”
“A storage facility.”
“Where?”
“Naperville.”
Emily frowned.
“What’s inside?”
“Everything I couldn’t trust to keep at home.”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
Thomas continued.
“Years ago, your mother discovered Victor had created a second company using stolen money.”
“What happened?”
“She gathered evidence.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“You said Mom didn’t know about the business.”
“She knew more than I told you.”
Thomas paused.
“She was going to expose Victor.”
“What stopped her?”
“She died.”
Emily stared.
Her mother’s death had always been described as an accident.
A rainy highway.
A car crash.
Emily had been twelve.
She remembered the funeral.
She remembered her father crying.
She remembered the empty chair at dinner afterward.
“You think Victor killed her?”
Thomas’s eyes filled with tears.
“I never had proof.”
“But you suspected him.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell the police?”
“I had no evidence.”
Daniel quietly said, “Your father’s investigation was reopened years later.”
Emily looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because a retired detective found a discrepancy in the accident report.”
“What discrepancy?”
“The brakes.”
Emily’s breath caught.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“The brake lines had been tampered with.”
Emily felt the room spin.
“My mother was murdered?”
“We don’t know for certain,” Daniel said.
“But your father has reason to believe it.”
Thomas handed her the key.
“That’s why you must see what’s in that facility.”
Emily closed her fingers around it.
Then footsteps approached.
A nurse entered.
“Mr. Carter, your wife is here.”
Thomas’s eyes opened.
Emily froze.
“My father’s wife?”
The nurse looked confused.
“Mrs. Carter.”
Emily stared at her father.
“Dad…”
Thomas slowly shook his head.
“I never remarried.”
The nurse looked at her clipboard.
“I’m sorry. I must have the wrong room.”
She turned.
Daniel suddenly noticed something.
“Wait.”
The nurse stopped.
Daniel looked at her badge.
Then at the clipboard.
“This isn’t your usual handwriting.”
The nurse smiled nervously.
“I’m filling in.”
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Where is your supervisor?”
The woman’s expression changed.
She dropped the clipboard.
Then ran.
Security caught her near the elevators.
Inside her bag, they found a syringe.
Emily’s hands went cold.
Her father looked at Daniel.
“They’re getting desperate.”
Daniel nodded.
“We need to move him.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere nobody knows about.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
Emily looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“I won’t run.”
“Dad—”
He looked at her with unexpected calm.
“Your mother ran once.”
Emily said nothing.
“She spent her final months afraid.”
Thomas squeezed the blanket.
“I refuse to spend my final days hiding.”
Daniel asked, “Then what do you want to do?”
Thomas looked at Emily.
“I want my daughter to know the truth.”
He pointed toward the metal key.
“Take her to the facility.”
Daniel nodded.
“And after that?”
Thomas’s voice became firm.
“Bring Victor Hale to me.”
