My Beautiful CEO Invited Me to Dinner… Then Leaned In and Whispered, “Tonight, I’m Not Your Boss”
Chapter 4
Amelia’s mother lived in Boston.
She had been distant from Amelia for years.
Not because they didn’t love each other.
Because grief had divided the family after Amelia’s father died.
Her mother blamed Amelia for choosing the company over family.
Amelia had never forgiven herself.
The trip forced them to confront the past.
Ethan stayed nearby.
He never interfered.
He listened.
When Amelia’s mother eventually apologized, Amelia cried.
Afterward, they walked along the waterfront.
“I didn’t know I needed to hear that.”
Ethan said:
“Sometimes we don’t know until someone says it.”
She smiled.
“You always know what to say.”
“No.”
“I just listen.”
She looked at him.
“That’s why.”
They sat on a bench.
Amelia leaned against him.
For the first time, Ethan felt her relax completely.
She whispered:
“I don’t want you to leave.”
He looked down at her.
“I won’t.”
She closed her eyes.
Their relationship deepened quietly.
When they returned to Chicago, they kept it private.
At work, professional.
Outside, together.
Movies.
Dinners.
Walks.
Ethan met her close friends.
Amelia met his sister.
The worlds began to merge.
But one person noticed.
Amelia’s brother, Julian.
He confronted Ethan.
“Are you serious about her?”
Ethan nodded.
“Yes.”
“Do you understand what that means?”
“Yes.”
“She’s not easy.”
“I know.”
“She’s stubborn.”
“I know.”
“She’ll put work before everything.”
“I know.”
Julian smiled.
“Then you’re either crazy or perfect for her.”
Ethan laughed.
“Probably both.”
Julian accepted him.
But the biggest obstacle wasn’t family.
It was the board.
A director discovered their relationship.
He threatened to expose it.
Amelia refused to be blackmailed.
She disclosed the relationship voluntarily.
The board reacted cautiously.
Some demanded Ethan’s resignation.
Amelia refused.
She said:
“He has earned his position independently.”
“His compensation is reviewed by an independent committee.”
“He has no access to decisions concerning my personal interests.”
The board accepted the arrangement.
Ethan kept his role.
Their relationship became public within the company.
The reaction was mixed.
Some employees were supportive.
Others were skeptical.
Ethan expected it.
Amelia didn’t care.
“Let them talk.”
He smiled.
“You’re very calm.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I’m terrified.”
“Of what?”
“Losing the company.”
He took her hand.
“You won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because you’re the best CEO I’ve ever worked for.”
She smiled.
“Only CEO?”
He laughed.
“Definitely the most beautiful.”
She rolled her eyes.
“You’ve become brave.”
“I learned from you.”
They kissed.
Then the phone rang.
Another corporate crisis.
They separated.
Amelia looked at him.
“Work.”
“Unfortunately.”
She smiled.
“Come with me.”
He followed.
The relationship wasn’t simple.
But neither of them wanted simple anymore.
They wanted real.
