My Beautiful CEO Invited Me to Dinner… Then Leaned In and Whispered, “Tonight, I’m Not Your Boss”

Chapter 2

Ethan didn’t sleep much that night.

He kept replaying Amelia’s words.

Tonight, I’m not your boss.

They sounded simple.

But he knew what they meant.

She had invited him into the private part of her life.

A part she showed almost nobody.

The next morning, Ethan expected everything to feel awkward.

It didn’t.

At nine sharp, Amelia walked into the executive meeting.

She wore the same expression she always did.

Calm.

Focused.

Professional.

“Good morning.”

Everyone answered.

Ethan looked at his notes.

She didn’t look at him.

For two hours, they discussed a major acquisition.

Nothing personal.

Nothing unusual.

After the meeting, Amelia called him into her office.

“How are you?”

“I’m fine.”

“Good.”

She paused.

“About last night…”

Ethan waited.

“If you’re uncomfortable, we can forget it.”

He smiled.

“I don’t want to forget it.”

She looked surprised.

“Neither do I.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“We need to be careful.”

“I know.”

“I am still your CEO.”

“Yes.”

“If anything happens, it can’t affect your career.”

“I understand.”

She nodded.

That was the last they said about it.

For several weeks.

They continued working.

But something had changed.

Amelia started asking Ethan to join her for coffee.

Sometimes lunch.

Sometimes late-night planning sessions became conversations about life.

She learned about his younger sister.

His divorce.

His father.

Ethan learned about Amelia’s family.

Her father had built Hartwell Industries.

When he died, everyone expected Amelia to sell.

She didn’t.

She expanded.

She fought.

She built.

But her success came at a cost.

Her younger brother had left the company.

Her mother lived overseas.

She had few people she trusted.

One evening, Ethan stayed late.

Amelia was still working.

“Why are you here?”

“Same reason you are.”

“Which is?”

“Apparently neither of us knows how to go home.”

She laughed.

“Fair.”

They ordered takeout.

The food arrived in cardboard containers.

Amelia kicked off her shoes.

Ethan stared.

“What?”

“I’ve never seen you do that.”

“Do what?”

“Relax.”

She smiled.

“You should see me on Sundays.”

“Now I want to.”

She looked at him.

“Careful.”

The air changed.

Again.

The problem wasn’t attraction.

It was trust.

Amelia trusted Ethan.

Ethan trusted Amelia.

And now they were both wondering what would happen if they stopped pretending the attraction wasn’t there.

Then a major crisis hit.

A confidential acquisition document was leaked.

Competitors suddenly knew Hartwell’s plans.

Amelia’s board panicked.

The share price dropped.

Investors demanded answers.

Ethan immediately began tracing the leak.

The source came from inside executive management.

Someone had copied files from Amelia’s private server.

The suspect list was small.

Amelia looked exhausted.

Ethan stayed in the office until two in the morning.

She finally said:

“Go home.”

“I won’t.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re still here.”

She looked at him.

“That’s not a reason.”

“It is for me.”

She was quiet.

Then she smiled.

“That’s dangerous.”

He smiled back.

“Probably.”

The investigation continued.

Ethan found the first major clue.

A senior vice president had accessed documents outside normal hours.

That executive denied everything.

Amelia believed him.

Ethan didn’t.

“Why don’t you trust him?”

“He has worked here fifteen years.”

“That’s why.”

Amelia looked at Ethan.

“You’ve changed.”

“How?”

“You question everything.”

He smiled.

“Not everything.”

She held his gaze.

“What don’t you question?”

He answered softly.

“You.”

That silenced her.
