My Beautiful CEO Invited Me to Dinner… Then Leaned In and Whispered, “Tonight, I’m Not Your Boss”
Chapter 12
As the years passed, Ethan and Amelia became more private.
They no longer attended many business events.
They traveled together.
Read.
Gardened.
Hosted dinners.
They still visited Hartwell.
But the company belonged to the next generation.
That was important.
Their daughter occasionally asked for advice.
Amelia gave it.
But never demanded control.
Ethan did the same.
Their family had learned to stand on its own.
One evening, Amelia found the original restaurant invitation.
The paper had faded.
She showed Ethan.
“Do you remember?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“You thought it was a business dinner.”
“I hoped it wasn’t.”
She laughed.
“What made you stay?”
He thought.
“You made me feel seen.”
She looked at him.
“That’s what you did for me.”
He smiled.
They sat together.
The old invitation lay between them.
A small piece of paper.
A moment that had changed everything.
Amelia touched it.
“If I hadn’t asked you…”
“You would’ve found someone else.”
She laughed.
“No.”
“I was lucky.”
“So was I.”
The silence felt comfortable.
Then Ethan asked:
“Would you do it again?”
“What?”
“Invite your employee to dinner.”
She smiled.
“Absolutely.”
“Why?”
“Because I’d still want to meet the man behind the résumé.”
He laughed.
“And I’d still be nervous.”
“Good.”
She kissed him.
