Millionaire’s Wife Humiliated the Waitress — Her Response Left the Entire Room Speechless!
Chapter 4
The next morning, Elena almost canceled the meeting.
She sat in her small apartment at 6:15 a.m., staring at the email on her phone.
Sterling Capital — 9:00 AM
Her daughter was eating cereal at the kitchen table.
“Mom?”
Elena looked up.
“Yeah?”
“Are you going to work today?”
“Not until tonight.”
“Are you nervous?”
Elena smiled.
“A little.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m meeting someone important.”
Lily frowned.
“More important than you?”
Elena laughed.
“No.”
“Then why are you nervous?”
The question was so simple that Elena didn’t know how to answer.
She reached across the table and touched Lily’s hand.
“Sometimes important people can make us forget what we’re capable of.”
Lily thought about it.
“Don’t forget.”
Elena smiled.
“I won’t.”
At 8:45, Elena entered Sterling Capital’s headquarters.
The lobby was enormous.
Glass walls.
Marble floors.
A bronze sculpture in the center.
People moved through the building wearing tailored suits and carrying laptops.
Elena suddenly felt underdressed.
She wore a navy blazer she had bought secondhand.
Her shoes were polished but old.
She held a folder containing thirty-seven pages of research.
A receptionist smiled.
“Ms. Brooks?”
“Yes.”
“Mr. Sterling is expecting you.”
The elevator carried her to the forty-second floor.
Daniel was waiting.
He wasn’t wearing a suit jacket.
He looked less like the billionaire from magazine covers and more like a tired man who hadn’t slept.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning.”
He gestured toward a conference room.
“Please.”
Elena sat.
Daniel placed a copy of her proposal on the table.
“I’ve read this six times.”
Elena blinked.
“Why?”
“Because I couldn’t understand why nobody else had funded it.”
She smiled faintly.
“That’s because they didn’t think restaurant workers were investors.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“You designed a system where employees could automatically direct small portions of their tips into diversified accounts.”
“Yes.”
“With emergency withdrawal protections.”
“Yes.”
“And employer matching.”
“Where possible.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s not a restaurant idea.”
“No.”
“It’s a financial inclusion model.”
Elena smiled.
“Exactly.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Why haven’t you finished your master’s degree?”
Elena’s expression changed.
“Because life got expensive.”
He nodded.
He didn’t ask for details.
For almost two hours, they discussed the proposal.
Daniel challenged assumptions.
Elena defended them.
He questioned market size.
She produced numbers.
He asked about regulation.
She had researched it.
At one point, Daniel leaned back.
“You know what’s unusual?”
“What?”
“You don’t seem impressed by me.”
Elena laughed.
“I served you dinner last night.”
“Technically, you served my wife.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel smiled.
Then the door opened.
A man in his early fifties entered.
Richard Sterling.
Daniel’s father.
Chairman of the company.
He looked at Elena.
Then at the proposal.
“Who’s she?”
Daniel answered.
“Elena Brooks.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“The waitress?”
Elena immediately understood.
He had heard.
Daniel stood.
“She’s the entrepreneur I told you about.”
Richard picked up the proposal.
He flipped through several pages.
Then tossed it onto the table.
“This is amateur.”
Elena’s jaw tightened.
“Which part?”
Richard looked surprised.
“Excuse me?”
“You said it’s amateur. I’d like to know which part.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Richard pointed to the financial assumptions.
“Your projected participation rate is unrealistic.”
Elena opened her folder.
“I anticipated that objection.”
She pulled out another document.
“We ran a six-month pilot across twelve restaurants.”
Richard looked at the numbers.
His expression changed.
The room became quiet.
Elena continued.
“Participation was forty-one percent.”
Richard looked at Daniel.
“You knew about this?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She didn’t tell me.”
Richard looked back at Elena.
“You hid the pilot?”
“I didn’t hide it.”
“Then why isn’t it in the proposal?”
“Because the data was preliminary.”
Richard stared at her.
For the first time, Elena saw uncertainty in his face.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“Excuse me.”
He stepped outside.
Daniel watched him leave.
“What was that?”
Elena asked.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he looked at her.
“My wife has been calling people this morning.”
“About me?”
Daniel nodded.
“And I think she’s trying to make sure you never get this investment.”
