Millionaire’s Wife Humiliated the Waitress — Her Response Left the Entire Room Speechless!
Chapter 3
Elena stared at him.
“My proposal?”
Daniel nodded.
“The financial platform.”
For several seconds, the sounds of the restaurant seemed to disappear.
Forks.
Glasses.
Music.
Conversation.
Everything blurred into the background.
“You read it?”
“I did.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
Elena couldn’t believe it.
The email from Sterling Capital had been brief.
Mr. Sterling would like to discuss your proposal.
She had assumed an associate had reviewed it.
She had never imagined Daniel Sterling himself had read it.
“You knew I worked here?”
Daniel glanced toward her name tag.
“I didn’t know until tonight.”
Elena’s face warmed.
“So tomorrow’s meeting…”
“Is still happening.”
Before Elena could respond, Victoria’s voice cut across the room.
“Daniel!”
He turned.
Victoria was watching them.
“What are you doing?”
Daniel walked back toward the table.
“Talking.”
“With the waitress?”
Elena felt the entire nearby section go quiet again.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Her name is Elena.”
Victoria laughed.
“Why do you know her name?”
“Because she has one.”
The other couple looked at each other.
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
Daniel sat down.
Elena returned to the service station.
For the next hour, she avoided Table 18 whenever possible.
But something had changed.
She was no longer invisible.
Several guests had heard Daniel mention her proposal.
One elderly man even stopped her.
“Are you the woman who designed that savings platform?”
Elena smiled awkwardly.
“Apparently.”
He chuckled.
“Good for you.”
By nine-thirty, Table 18 was finishing dessert.
Elena approached with the check.
Victoria looked at the total.
Then looked at Elena.
“You’ve made several mistakes tonight.”
Elena blinked.
“I believe everything is correct.”
“Believe?”
Victoria handed the check back.
“I want the manager.”
Mr. Harris arrived within seconds.
“Mrs. Sterling?”
“Your waitress has been disrespectful.”
Elena remained silent.
Mr. Harris looked at her.
“Elena?”
Victoria interrupted.
“She has an attitude.”
Daniel sighed.
“Victoria, enough.”
“No.”
Victoria pointed at Elena.
“She thinks she’s better than everyone because she has some little business idea.”
Elena’s expression remained calm.
Victoria continued.
“Do you know what happens to people who think they’re special?”
Daniel stood.
“Victoria.”
But she wasn’t listening.
“They stay waitresses.”
The sentence echoed through the dining room.
Someone dropped a fork.
Elena felt the old instinct rise inside her.
Apologize.
Walk away.
Protect the paycheck.
But then she remembered Lily.
She remembered every night Lily had asked why she worked so late.
She remembered the university textbooks still sitting in a box beneath her bed.
She remembered the proposal.
And she remembered Daniel telling her that he had read it.
Elena looked directly at Victoria.
“I never said I was better than you.”
Victoria smiled.
“You didn’t have to.”
Elena nodded.
“You’re right.”
Then she turned toward Mr. Harris.
“May I say something?”
He hesitated.
“Briefly.”
Elena faced Victoria.
“You’ve spent the entire evening trying to prove that you’re above me.”
Victoria’s eyes narrowed.
“And?”
“And I think that’s the saddest thing I’ve seen all night.”
Silence.
Victoria’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Elena continued.
“You have a beautiful dress. A very expensive ring. A husband whose name opens doors.”
Daniel looked down.
“But none of those things make you more valuable than the person standing in front of you.”
Victoria’s face reddened.
“How dare you?”
Elena’s voice remained quiet.
“You asked for humility.”
She placed the check on the table.
“So I’ll give you mine.”
Then she walked away.
This time, nobody laughed.
Not even Victoria.
But Elena didn’t realize that the most important person in the room wasn’t watching Victoria.
He was watching her.
Daniel Sterling.
And for the first time that evening, he wasn’t looking at Elena like a waitress.
He was looking at her like a woman who might understand something he had forgotten.
