I Hated My Cold Boss — Until a Storm Trapped Us in the Cabin

Chapter 5

The rescue road opened the next morning.

The weather had cleared enough for a vehicle to reach the cabin.

Claire packed her bags.

Adrian did the same.

Neither spoke much.

The easy connection of the previous days seemed to disappear under the weight of reality.

At the door, Claire turned.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“The cabin.”

He nodded.

“You’re welcome.”

She waited.

Nothing else came.

They drove back toward the airport.

Professional again.

Claire sat beside him.

Her laptop was open.

She answered emails.

Adrian made calls.

The silence was different.

Not comfortable.

Avoidant.

At the airport, Adrian turned to her.

“We’ll talk tomorrow.”

“About?”

“You.”

She nodded.

He flew back on another flight.

Claire returned to Boston alone.

The next morning, Adrian called her into his office.

He looked exactly like the CEO she had always known.

Suit.

Tie.

Controlled expression.

Claire sat.

“You wanted to see me?”

“Yes.”

He handed her a folder.

“New position.”

She opened it.

Director of Strategic Operations.

Higher salary.

More authority.

Different reporting structure.

She looked at him.

“You were serious.”

“Yes.”

“You arranged all this before the cabin?”

“I prepared it.”

“Why?”

“Because you earned it.”

Claire nodded.

Then asked:

“That’s all?”

He stared.

“That’s the professional answer.”

She looked away.

“And the personal answer?”

His jaw tightened.

“We shouldn’t mix them.”

Claire felt something collapse inside her.

Of course.

The storm was over.

Reality returned.

She stood.

“Understood.”

She left.

For the next month, they barely spoke outside meetings.

Claire accepted the promotion.

She became one of the company’s most valuable executives.

Adrian remained distant.

She told herself that was good.

It was safer.

But then she discovered something.

Adrian had rejected two offers to purchase her old division.

He had protected the jobs of everyone under her.

When the board challenged her promotion, he defended it publicly.

He never took credit.

One evening, Claire stayed late.

She found Adrian alone in the conference room.

He was looking at the Montana project.

“You never sleep.”

He looked up.

“Neither do you.”

She sat.

“Why are you avoiding me?”

“I thought I was giving you space.”

“You were giving me silence.”

He sighed.

“There’s a difference.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“Do you regret what happened?”

“No.”

“Then why pretend it didn’t?”

“Because I’m your boss.”

“Not anymore.”

He froze.

She continued:

“I report to the board.”

“Exactly.”

“Then what are you afraid of?”

He looked at her.

“That I’ll ruin your career.”

“You won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know you.”

He looked away.

She stepped closer.

“You told me in the cabin that I should choose my own life.”

“Yes.”

“Then let me.”

He stared at her.

“What do you want?”

She answered honestly.

“You.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“I want you too.”

Her heart raced.

“But?”

“But I want you free enough to leave.”

She smiled through tears.

“Then give me the choice.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

That evening, they walked out of the office together.

No titles.

No staff.

Just two adults making a decision.

They agreed to start dating privately.

With boundaries.

With separate reporting.

With no special treatment.

For the first time, their relationship existed outside the cabin.

And it felt even more real.
