I Hated My Cold Boss — Until a Storm Trapped Us in the Cabin
Chapter 11
Adrian eventually stepped down from the board completely.
He wanted more time.
Claire had already shifted into a consulting role.
Their companies had stable leadership.
Their children had careers.
They were grandparents now.
Life had moved faster than either expected.
One morning, Adrian found Claire in the garden.
She was planting flowers.
He smiled.
“You hate gardening.”
“I changed.”
“So did I.”
He sat beside her.
They worked quietly.
It was ordinary.
That made it special.
Later, they drove to the cabin alone.
No children.
No grandchildren.
Just them.
The snow was light.
The road was clear.
Claire opened the door.
“Still feels the same.”
Adrian nodded.
“Not really.”
She looked at him.
“Why not?”
“Because I remember being afraid.”
“And now?”
“I’m not.”
She smiled.
They walked through the cabin.
The old table remained.
So did the fireplace.
The photograph of his father was still there.
Claire touched the frame.
“I think he’d be proud.”
Adrian nodded.
“Maybe.”
She looked at him.
“You became what he wanted.”
“And what I wanted.”
She smiled.
“That’s better.”
They sat near the fire.
Claire asked:
“Do you ever wonder what would’ve happened if the storm had never trapped us?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I would’ve kept working.”
“Would I have stayed?”
“Probably.”
“That’s not romantic.”
“It is to me.”
She laughed.
Then he continued.
“I think we would’ve found each other eventually.”
“Why?”
“Because I was already looking for someone who challenged me.”
She smiled.
“And I was already looking for someone who would make me feel safe.”
He took her hand.
“You found him.”
“I did.”
They kissed.
The moment was quiet.
No grand speech.
Just certainty.
