Julian ordered the survey team to stop work.

He walked into the tunnel with Amelia.

Wooden floors.

Shelves.

Solar lights.

A kitchen.

A desk covered with architectural drawings.

Julian picked up one of the sketches.

“What is this?”

“An affordable modular home.”

“You designed it?”

“Yes.”

He looked around.

“You built all this?”

“Most of it.”

Julian stared at her.

“Who helped you?”

“No one.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

Amelia smiled faintly.

“Because nobody was coming.”

Something in her answer stayed with him.

The engineer examined the chamber.

“It’s structurally sound.”

Julian frowned.

“What?”

“The cliff is naturally reinforced.”

That made everything worse.

If they demolished the cliff, they could destabilize the entire hillside.

Julian returned to Amelia.

“How did you know?”

“Because I’ve lived here for five years.”

He smiled.

“You’re going to be a problem.”

She crossed her arms.

“Good.”
