Her Children Left Her With Nothing — Until Grandma Inherited an Abandoned Farm and Discovered the Fortune Hidden in Its Barn
Chapter 6
The key opened a hidden compartment beneath the barn workbench.
Inside was a metal box.
Margaret lifted it carefully.
There was no lock.
Only another symbol.
When she opened it, she found old financial documents.
Stock certificates.
Bond certificates.
Property agreements.
And something she didn’t recognize.
A list of names.
Companies.
Dates.
Values.
Lucas examined the papers.
“These are investment records.”
“From when?”
“Thirty years ago.”
Margaret frowned.
The portfolio belonged to Harold.
He had invested in several early technology companies.
Many had later become enormously valuable.
Margaret couldn’t believe it.
“He bought shares before these companies became successful.”
Lucas nodded.
“Looks like it.”
“How much are they worth?”
He ran the numbers.
Then stopped.
“Current estimated value?”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“Over eighteen million.”
Margaret sat down.
The fortune wasn’t under the barn.
Part of it was inside the barn.
Harold had accumulated wealth quietly.
He had never told anyone.
But there was more.
One certificate belonged to a small battery company.
The company had recently been acquired by a major corporation.
Margaret’s share was now worth several million.
She stared.
“Why would Harold hide this?”
Lucas answered:
“Maybe because he didn’t trust anyone with it.”
Margaret looked toward Thomas’s letter.
Maybe the whole family had been built around secrets.
Not to deceive.
To protect.
She kept searching.
At the bottom of the box was a handwritten document.
Margaret,
This time, it was from Harold.
I knew you would eventually receive the farm.
Your children are good people, but they have grown accustomed to believing that security comes from what they can own.
You were always different.
Margaret wiped her eyes.
The letter continued.
The farm is not your fortune. The farm is your choice.
Inside this box is enough money for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life.
Do not give it away out of guilt.
Do not sell it because someone pressures you.
Use it to build something that makes you proud.
Margaret closed the letter.
Samuel smiled.
“You have a lot of people looking out for you.”
She laughed sadly.
“Apparently.”
Then she looked toward the fields.
“Maybe I know what to do.”
Lucas asked:
“What?”
Margaret answered:
“Keep the farm.”
“But what about the mineral rights?”
“Protect them.”
“You could make millions.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
She smiled.
“Because my family already has enough money.”
She looked at the barn.
“What they never had was a reason to come home.”
Lucas understood.
She wasn’t going to sell.
She was going to transform the farm.
But first, she needed to uncover every secret Harold had left behind.
