He Lost His Job, His Wife Left Him… Then He Found a Fortune He Forgot
Chapter 8
Daniel heard shouting.
A door slammed.
Then gunfire.
He grabbed Emily and pulled her behind a steel table.
“Stay down.”
Security lights flickered on.
Collins stood in the doorway with two armed men.
Voss was gone.
Emily clung to Daniel.
“Dad.”
“I’m here.”
She began crying.
Daniel hugged her tightly.
For years, he had believed he had failed his family.
Now he realized someone had deliberately made him believe it.
They returned home.
Daniel refused to sleep.
He replayed Voss’s words.
Your father didn’t leave it in the warehouse.
He searched his father’s letters.
Photographs.
Tax records.
Old business contracts.
Nothing.
Then Sarah entered the study.
“I found something.”
She placed an old family photograph on his desk.
Daniel stared.
His father stood beside a wooden bookshelf.
Behind him was a painting.
Daniel recognized it.
It had hung in his childhood home.
“Why?”
Sarah pointed to the frame.
“Look at the corner.”
Daniel removed the painting.
Behind it was a small indentation.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a metal tube.
Daniel opened it.
A rolled document emerged.
Not the ledger.
A map.
It showed Chicago.
Several properties were marked.
One was his childhood home.
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“My father’s house.”
They drove there before dawn.
The house had been sold years ago.
But Daniel still had access.
He entered the basement.
Behind an old furnace was another compartment.
Inside was a black ledger.
Daniel lifted it.
Every page contained transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Companies.
And at the very end was a list of people.
Judges.
Bankers.
Politicians.
Business executives.
Police officers.
People still alive.
People still powerful.
Daniel turned the final page.
One name stood alone.
Richard Voss.
Beside it was a handwritten note from his father.
He isn’t the mastermind.
Daniel stared.
“Then who is?”
Sarah looked over his shoulder.
The answer was written beneath it.
A name Daniel knew better than anyone.
His former employer.
His boss.
The man who had fired him.
Daniel sat down.
“My boss wasn’t working for Voss.”
Sarah whispered:
“Voss was working for him.”
Daniel suddenly understood the scale of it.
The fortune wasn’t merely money.
It was evidence.
His father had spent decades hiding the truth.
And Daniel had accidentally inherited the one thing that could bring down an entire network.
But there was one final page missing.
Daniel flipped through the ledger.
The last transaction ended abruptly.
Someone had removed a page.
Sarah looked at him.
“Who took it?”
Daniel knew.
Because the missing page contained the name of the person who had helped his father hide everything.
And there was only one person who had known where the ledger was.
