He Lost His Job, His Wife Left Him… Then He Found a Fortune He Forgot
Chapter 10
Daniel contacted federal investigators through a lawyer he trusted.
He didn’t reveal everything.
Not yet.
He gave them enough evidence to open an investigation.
The response was immediate.
Agents began monitoring the network.
But someone inside the system warned the criminals.
Every operation was one step ahead.
Daniel realized they had a leak.
He couldn’t trust the local police.
He couldn’t trust his old colleagues.
He couldn’t trust anyone connected to the financial system.
So he turned to the one person nobody expected.
Rachel.
She agreed to help.
Together they traced the hidden accounts.
The pattern led to a private bank in Switzerland.
Then to a trust in the Cayman Islands.
Then back to Chicago.
The money had been circulating for decades.
But one account stood out.
It had been opened three days after Daniel’s birth.
The beneficiary was Daniel.
He stared at the screen.
“Why would my father do that?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Maybe he knew you’d need it.”
“No.”
Daniel looked closer.
The account had received one deposit.
Thirty million dollars.
It had never been touched.
Until two weeks earlier.
Someone had attempted to withdraw everything.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
The withdrawal authorization carried his electronic signature.
The same signature used to frame him.
Daniel smiled.
“They made a mistake.”
“What?”
“They used my signature.”
“So?”
“They forgot something.”
He opened his old employment records.
At the time the signature was supposedly created, Daniel had been in a hospital room.
His daughter had been born.
He had spent the entire night beside Sarah.
There were medical records.
Witnesses.
Photographs.
Proof.
The fraudulent signature could finally be disproved.
But Daniel wanted more.
He wanted the person who ordered it.
They created a false transaction.
They made it appear that Daniel had authorized another transfer.
Then they waited.
Someone accessed the account.
Rachel captured the login.
The address belonged to Daniel’s former employer.
His boss.
The mastermind.
Daniel forwarded everything to federal investigators.
That night, agents raided the office.
But the boss was gone.
On his desk was a note.
You should have stayed poor.
Daniel read it.
Then laughed quietly.
Sarah looked at him.
“What?”
“He thinks money is what I found.”
Daniel folded the note.
“He’s wrong.”
“What did you find?”
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“The truth.”
