Sarah held Emily close.
Daniel found an old emergency passage his father had built into the house.
They escaped through it.
Outside, federal vehicles waited.
The lead agent was there.
He looked at Daniel.
“You were right.”
“Who is he?”
The agent hesitated.
“Deputy Director Alan Pierce.”
Daniel felt sick.

He had been feeding information back to the network.
“How do we stop him?”
“We expose him publicly.”
“Then do it.”
The agent shook his head.
“We need Pierce to incriminate himself.”
Daniel understood.
He had one opportunity.
He called Pierce.
“I found the page.”
Silence.
Then Pierce asked:
“What do you want?”
“Nothing.”
“What?”
“I want to know why.”
Pierce laughed.
“You really think this is about money?”
Daniel looked at Sarah.
Then answered:
“No.”

Pierce went silent.
