He Came Home Early and Heard His Mother Threatening His Wife—Then a Hidden Secret Was Revealed
Chapter 8
Victor opened the driver’s door.
Michael looked up at him.
Rain poured through the broken windshield.
Victor appeared completely calm.
He wore an expensive black coat and held an umbrella.
Behind him stood several men.
Daniel was still conscious in the back seat.
Emily was shaking.
Victor looked directly at Michael.
“You should have stayed ignorant.”
Michael stared at him.
“You killed my father.”
Victor smiled.
“Your father killed himself.”
“By trying to expose you?”
Victor’s expression changed.
“Your father betrayed me.”
Michael felt anger rising.
“You destroyed families.”
Victor shrugged.
“Business requires sacrifice.”
Daniel suddenly laughed.
Victor looked toward the back seat.
“You.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You’ve been hiding for twenty years.”
“And you still haven’t learned.”
Victor stepped closer.
“You can’t win.”
Daniel replied:
“You already lost.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
Then sirens appeared in the distance.
Victor looked toward the road.
His men immediately moved.
Michael realized Daniel had triggered an emergency transmitter.
The police arrived.
But the sheriff stepped out.
Michael’s fear returned.
The sheriff looked at Victor.
Then at Michael.
“Everyone out of the vehicle.”
Victor smiled.
Michael whispered to Daniel:
“He’s with him.”
Daniel nodded.
The sheriff approached.
“Michael, come with me.”
Michael didn’t move.
The sheriff’s hand moved toward his weapon.
Then another vehicle arrived.
Federal agents.
The sheriff froze.
Michael realized Daniel had sent the evidence to them before the crash.
An agent approached.
“Victor Blackwell, you’re under arrest.”
Victor stared.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
The agent smiled.
“We know exactly who we’re dealing with.”
Victor was handcuffed.
The sheriff was arrested moments later.
Michael watched in disbelief.
For twenty years, Victor had believed himself untouchable.
Now it was over.
But when Michael thought the danger had ended, one federal agent approached him.
“We recovered the files from the flash drive.”
Michael nodded.
“Is it enough?”
The agent hesitated.
“There’s a problem.”
“What?”
“Someone deleted the final section.”
Michael looked at Daniel.
Daniel’s expression became serious.
“The final section contains the name of the person who funded Northstar.”
Michael frowned.
“Victor?”
“No.”
“Your father?”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Someone above both of them.”
Michael felt cold.
“Who?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
The agent said:
“We recovered part of the file.”
He handed Michael a printed page.
Only one sentence was visible.
Northstar was never about the land.
Michael stared.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
“That’s what we need to find out.”
