Michael couldn’t speak.
His father had died eight years earlier.
A heart attack, according to every document Michael had ever seen.
But Thomas had just said something completely different.
“The people who killed my father?”
Thomas nodded.
“Your father wasn’t supposed to die.”
Michael stared at him.
“Then what happened?”
Thomas hesitated.
“Your father tried to leave the organization.”
“What organization?”
“The Carter Group wasn’t just a construction company.”
Michael felt sick.
“What was it?”
Thomas looked at the documents.
“Your father was part of a private network of businessmen, politicians, lawyers, and property developers.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
Michael shook his head.
“That’s not enough.”
“It started with land.”
Thomas explained that twenty years earlier, several wealthy investors discovered geological surveys showing enormous mineral deposits beneath a remote region.
The problem was that thousands of acres belonged to ordinary families.
The investors couldn’t simply buy everything.
So they created a system.
They manipulated property records.
They pressured families.
They bribed officials.
They manufactured legal disputes.
And when someone refused to cooperate, they found other ways to make that person disappear.
Daniel Reed had been one of the first people to discover the operation.
He had worked as an accountant for one of the companies.
He noticed payments that didn’t make sense.
Money was being transferred through dozens of shell companies.
Daniel began investigating.
Eventually, he discovered the entire network.
“He tried to expose them,” Thomas said.
Michael looked at the photograph.
“And my father tried to stop him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father had already invested everything.”
Michael closed his eyes.
His entire childhood had been built around the image of a hardworking businessman.
Now he was learning that his father had been part of a criminal organization.
“What happened to Daniel?”
“He was attacked.”
“The accident.”
Thomas nodded.
“His car was forced off the road.”
“But he survived.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your mother found him.”
Michael turned toward Margaret.
She was crying.
“Tell me.”
Margaret wiped her face.
“I received a call from Daniel that night.”
“You knew he was alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you take him to a hospital?”
“Because the people who attacked him were looking for him.”
Margaret explained that Daniel was badly injured.
She brought him to the hidden room beneath the house.
She treated his wounds.
She gave him food.
She kept him alive.
For several weeks, Daniel remained hidden.
Then he disappeared.
Michael stared at his mother.
“Where did he go?”
“I don’t know.”
Thomas interrupted.
“I do.”
Everyone turned toward him.
Thomas pulled another photograph from the envelope.
A man stood beside a small farmhouse.
He was older.
Gray hair.
A scar across his jaw.
Michael stared.
“That’s Daniel.”
Thomas nodded.
“He’s alive.”
Michael felt tears forming in his eyes.
“Why didn’t he come back?”
“Because he knew they were watching.”
“Who?”
Thomas finally said the name.
“Victor Blackwell.”
Michael recognized it immediately.
Victor Blackwell was one of the richest businessmen in the state.
He owned banks, hotels, and real estate companies.
Michael had met him several times.
Victor had even attended his father’s funeral.
Michael’s stomach turned.
“You’re telling me he was involved?”
Thomas nodded.
“He was the one controlling everything.”
Michael looked at Emily.
She had been silent the entire time.
“How much did you know?”
Emily whispered:
“Enough to be afraid.”
Michael looked away.
Then a gunshot echoed from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Thomas grabbed the envelope.
“Get out.”
Michael shook his head.
“Not without answers.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You’ll get them.”
He pointed toward a second passage hidden behind the filing cabinet.
“But if you stay here, you’ll never get the chance.”
