He Came Home Early and Heard His Mother Threatening His Wife—Then a Hidden Secret Was Revealed
Chapter 3
The footsteps above them stopped.
Michael held his breath.
Emily stood pressed against the wall.
Margaret remained completely still.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the basement light flickered.
Someone had switched it on.
Michael looked toward the staircase.
A shadow appeared.
He immediately grabbed Emily’s hand and pulled her behind one of the filing cabinets.
Margaret crouched beside them.
The footsteps descended slowly.
A man appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
Michael couldn’t see his face.
The man walked directly toward the desk.
He looked around.
Then he opened a drawer.
Michael recognized him.
It was Thomas Hale.
A former business partner of Michael’s father.
Thomas had disappeared from the public eye years ago.
Michael had always assumed he had retired.
Apparently, he hadn’t.
Thomas removed a small envelope from the drawer.
Michael waited until the man turned away.
Then he stepped out.
“Looking for something?”
Thomas spun around.
His face went white.
“Michael.”
“What are you doing here?”
Thomas looked toward Margaret.
“You shouldn’t have opened this room.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Why?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
“What’s in the envelope?”
Thomas tightened his grip.
“You need to leave.”
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps telling me to leave.”
“Because you’re in danger.”
“From who?”
Thomas looked toward the staircase.
“People who have spent twenty years making sure this room stays hidden.”
Michael’s anger faded.
Twenty years.
“What happened twenty years ago?”
Thomas looked at Margaret.
She closed her eyes.
“Tell him.”
Thomas stared at her.
“You finally decided?”
Margaret nodded.
Thomas sighed.
Then he placed the envelope on the desk.
“Your father and several other businessmen were involved in an illegal land acquisition operation.”
Michael frowned.
“Land?”
“Thousands of acres.”
“That’s it?”
Thomas shook his head.
“They forced families off their property.”
Michael looked confused.
“How?”
“Fraudulent claims. Bribed officials. Fake environmental reports.”
Michael stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because there was something underneath the land.”
Thomas opened the envelope.
Inside was an old geological survey.
Michael studied it.
A large section had been circled in red.
“What is that?”
“An underground water reserve.”
Michael looked up.
“So they wanted the land for water?”
“Not just water.”
Thomas pointed to another document.
Mineral deposits.
Rare metals.
A massive underground reserve.
Michael stared.
“How valuable?”
“Billions.”
Margaret spoke quietly.
“And people were willing to kill for it.”
Michael turned.
“People?”
Thomas nodded.
“One family refused to sell.”
“Which family?”
Thomas hesitated.
“Daniel Reed’s.”
Michael froze.
“Daniel was involved?”
“Daniel discovered what your father was doing.”
Michael looked at the photograph again.
“That’s why he died.”
Thomas shook his head.
“Daniel didn’t die.”
Silence.
Michael’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Thomas looked at Margaret.
“Tell him.”
Margaret began crying.
“Daniel survived the accident.”
Michael stared at her.
“But the funeral…”
“It was staged.”
Michael stepped backward.
“Why?”
“Because your father wanted everyone to believe Daniel was dead.”
Michael felt dizzy.
His father had lied about a man’s death.
His mother had known.
And Emily had somehow become involved.
Then Thomas said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel has been alive this entire time.”
Michael stared at him.
“Where?”
Thomas pointed toward the old map.
“He’s the reason your mother has been protecting this secret.”
Michael looked at Margaret.
“Where is he?”
She whispered:
“Under another name.”
Before Michael could ask more, Thomas’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
“What?”
He listened.
Then hung up.
Michael watched him.
“Who was that?”
Thomas looked toward the basement entrance.
“They know you opened the room.”
Michael’s heart sank.
“Who?”
Thomas whispered:
“The people who killed your father.”
