CEO Asked a Single Dad for a Ride—Then Froze at What Hung From His Mirror
Chapter 7
Daniel sat on the floor reading the letter.
Every sentence destroyed another piece of the life he thought he understood.
His father had been involved with Thomas Sterling.
Not as a criminal.
As an investigator.
He had been collecting evidence against the same network.
When Thomas disappeared, Daniel’s father took the ledger and went into hiding.
Years later, he started a new life.
He married.
Had a son.
And never spoke about the past.
Daniel couldn’t understand.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Victoria sat beside him.
“Because he thought silence would protect you.”
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.”
Marcus had returned.
He was bleeding from his shoulder.
Daniel stood.
“What happened?”
Marcus leaned against the wall.
“They’re searching the tunnels.”
“Are they coming here?”
“Yes.”
Victoria looked at the ledger.
“What does it contain?”
Marcus opened it.
Names.
Companies.
Bank accounts.
Dates.
Payments.
Everything.
Daniel flipped through the pages.
Then he saw a name he recognized.
A current government official.
Another was a famous businessman.
Another belonged to a major financial institution.
The network had survived for decades.
It hadn’t disappeared.
It had evolved.
Victoria understood immediately.
“This could destroy them.”
Marcus nodded.
“That’s why your father hid it.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Where was my father during all this?”
Marcus answered quietly.
“Your father died twelve years ago.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had spent years believing his father was simply a distant man.
Now he realized his father’s silence had been fear.
Then Daniel found something else.
A page written by Emily.
I promised Thomas I would protect Victoria.
Another sentence followed.
I also promised Michael I would protect Daniel.
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
Emily had known everything.
She had carried the secret alone.
Victoria placed her hand on his shoulder.
“She protected both of us.”
Daniel nodded.
Then he noticed something strange.
The final pages were missing.
Someone had removed them.
Marcus looked alarmed.
“The names of the current leaders.”
Daniel stood.
“Who took them?”
Marcus shook his head.
“Someone who knew where the ledger was.”
A phone rang.
Not Daniel’s.
Victoria’s.
She looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Bring the ledger to the old courthouse.”
Victoria froze.
“Who is this?”
“You know who.”
The call ended.
Marcus looked at her.
“Don’t go.”
Daniel looked at the ledger.
“We don’t have a choice.”
“We absolutely do.”
Daniel shook his head.
“They know about Lily.”
Marcus stared at him.
“What?”
“They went to her school.”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Then this is bigger than the ledger.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“We need to get my daughter somewhere safe.”
They left the lighthouse through another exit.
Daniel called Lily’s school.
She was safe.
But when he reached for his keys, he noticed something.
The wooden lighthouse charm was gone.
He searched the truck.
Nothing.
Someone had taken it.
Then Victoria’s phone received another message.
A photograph.
Lily leaving school.
Taken from across the street.
Underneath it were six words.
Bring the lighthouse, or she disappears.
Daniel stared at the screen.
His entire body went cold.
The person threatening Lily had the one thing they needed.
And they knew exactly how much it meant.
