CEO Asked a Single Dad for a Ride—Then Froze at What Hung From His Mirror

Chapter 5

Marcus didn’t enter immediately.

He stood outside the warehouse door.

“Victoria, you need to listen to me.”

Daniel whispered:

“Stay behind me.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if he wanted us dead, we’d already be dead.”

Daniel wasn’t convinced.

Marcus finally entered.

He looked older than the photograph.

His hair was gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But his eyes were sharp.

He looked at Daniel.

“You’re Emily’s husband.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You knew my wife.”

Marcus nodded.

“I did.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“I tried to protect her.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You disappeared.”

“I had to.”

“You left me alone.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“You were my father’s security chief.”

“I was.”

“You knew he was in danger.”

“I did.”

“Then why didn’t you save him?”

Marcus looked down.

“Because I was the reason they found him.”

Silence.

Marcus explained that Thomas had discovered the criminal network.

Marcus had initially been working for the people involved.

He had been paid to monitor Thomas.

But over time, he changed sides.

He warned Thomas.

Together, they created a plan.

Thomas would disappear.

Emily would protect Victoria.

Marcus would mislead the people hunting them.

But something went wrong.

Thomas disappeared before the plan could be completed.

Everyone assumed he was dead.

Marcus continued searching.

“What about Emily?” Daniel asked.

Marcus looked at him.

“She kept the secret.”

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because she knew they were still watching.”

Daniel felt anger rising.

“She could have told me.”

Marcus nodded.

“Maybe.”

He looked at the wooden lighthouse.

“That’s what they wanted.”

“The charm?”

“The ledger.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Where is my father?”

Marcus hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“You don’t?”

“No.”

“Then what have you been searching for?”

“The evidence.”

Marcus explained that Thomas had hidden a ledger containing the names of everyone involved.

If the ledger surfaced, the entire network could collapse.

Daniel looked at the charm.

“And you think it’s at the lighthouse.”

Marcus nodded.

“But you’re not the only ones looking.”

Daniel heard another sound outside.

Several vehicles.

Marcus’s expression changed.

“They’re here.”

“Who?”

“The people Thomas was investigating.”

Daniel grabbed the documents.

“What do we do?”

Marcus looked at Victoria.

“You need to leave.”

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus stared at her.

“They’ll kill you.”

“They’ve been trying for seventeen years.”

She picked up the lighthouse.

“I’m done running.”

Daniel looked at his daughter in his mind.

He had no interest in getting involved in a dangerous conspiracy.

But he couldn’t ignore the truth about Emily.

And he couldn’t let Lily become a target.

They escaped through a rear entrance.

Marcus led them toward the coast.

The old lighthouse stood on a cliff several miles away.

Daniel drove.

Victoria sat beside him.

Marcus followed behind.

For the first time, Daniel understood what had been hanging from his mirror.

It wasn’t merely a gift from his daughter.

It was the final piece of a seventeen-year-old mystery.

And whoever controlled that mystery would control the fate of one of the most powerful families in America.
