CEO Asked a Single Dad for a Ride—Then Froze at What Hung From His Mirror
Chapter 4
Daniel couldn’t sleep that night.
He sat at the kitchen table surrounded by Emily’s old documents.
Victoria sat across from him.
The billionaire CEO who had spent her entire life controlling boardrooms and billion-dollar negotiations looked completely lost.
“My father didn’t abandon me,” she whispered.
Daniel looked at her.
“You think he was trying to protect you.”
“I know he was.”
She picked up the photograph.
“I was eight when he disappeared.”
Daniel said nothing.
“My mother died when I was six. My father raised me alone.”
She paused.
“He told me there were people who wanted him dead.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because he discovered something.”
“The fraud?”
“More than fraud.”
Victoria opened the black notebook.
Her father had documented a network of shell companies.
Money had been moved through several businesses.
The transactions were connected to politicians, contractors, and corporate executives.
Thomas had planned to expose them.
Then he vanished.
“Why didn’t the police find anything?”
“Because someone inside the investigation was involved.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Marcus Vale?”
Victoria nodded.
“He wasn’t just my father’s security chief.”
She turned another page.
“He was the person my father trusted most.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
“Then why would he be looking for the lighthouse?”
“Because he knows what it opens.”
Daniel looked at the charm.
“A key?”
Victoria nodded.
“My father created three matching objects.”
“Three lighthouses?”
“Three wooden charms.”
Daniel remembered what Victoria had said earlier.
“One for you.”
“One for my brother.”
“And the third?”
Victoria looked at Emily’s photograph.
“Someone who knew the truth.”
Daniel realized something.
“Emily.”
Victoria nodded.
“Exactly.”
Daniel sat back.
His wife hadn’t merely known Thomas Sterling.
She had been part of his secret.
Then Daniel remembered something else.
Emily had always been unusually protective of certain boxes.
She had never allowed Daniel to touch some old documents.
He had assumed they were personal memories.
Now he understood.
She had been hiding evidence.
Victoria opened another page.
There was a location.
A coastal warehouse.
Daniel recognized the address.
“That’s near the old harbor.”
Victoria nodded.
“My father owned that warehouse.”
They decided to go there before anyone else could.
They drove after midnight.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Inside, dust covered everything.
Daniel used his flashlight to search the walls.
Victoria found an old metal cabinet.
Inside was a key.
Not an ordinary key.
It had a tiny lighthouse engraved into the handle.
Daniel held it up.
“The third key.”
Victoria nodded.
But there was something else.
A letter.
It was addressed to Victoria.
If you are reading this, I failed to come home.
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
She read silently.
Thomas explained that he had discovered a criminal network inside his company.
He had trusted only three people.
Emily Carter.
Marcus Vale.
And his daughter.
But someone had betrayed him.
The final line was devastating.
If Marcus finds the lighthouse, he will find the ledger. Never let him have it.
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“Where’s the ledger?”
She stared at the charm.
“I think it’s inside the lighthouse.”
Daniel removed the wooden charm from his mirror.
He turned it over.
The lighthouse had a tiny seam.
He pressed it.
Nothing happened.
Then he noticed a small indentation shaped like the key.
He inserted the key.
The wooden lighthouse clicked open.
Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.
Victoria opened it.
There was only one sentence.
The ledger is beneath the place where your father promised to come home.
Victoria immediately understood.
“The old lighthouse.”
Daniel looked toward her.
“We’re going there.”
But before they could leave, headlights appeared outside.
A vehicle stopped near the warehouse.
Daniel turned off the flashlight.
Footsteps approached.
Then someone spoke from outside.
“Victoria.”
She froze.
Marcus Vale had found them.
