At the hospital, Marcus woke to find both of them beside him.
“Am I dying?”

“I need to tell you something.”

He reached for her hand.

Elena squeezed it.
Outside the room, Daniel watched.
He smiled.
Then he saw Noah sitting in a chair.
“What’s wrong?”
Noah looked worried.
“Grandpa is sick.”
“He’ll be okay.”
“How do you know?”
Daniel smiled.
“Because he has too many people bothering him to let him leave.”
Noah laughed.
Inside the room, Marcus heard them.
For the first time, being surrounded didn’t feel like weakness.
