Billionaire CEO Froze as Her Paralyzed Daughter Ran to a Single Dad—A Hidden Navy SEAL

Chapter 5

The police found no shooter.

But they found something else.

A small transmitter had been attached beneath Daniel’s car.

Marcus examined it.

“This isn’t amateur.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Who would do this?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Someone from my past.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know yet.”

Claire’s patience broke.

“Then start finding out.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You shouldn’t involve yourself.”

“This is already involving me.”

“Your daughter is the target.”

“Then I’ll protect her.”

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, he smiled.

“You sound like a commander.”

“I run a company worth eight billion dollars.”

“That doesn’t make you bulletproof.”

“No.”

Claire stepped closer.

“But neither does hiding in a maintenance job.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

She had struck something.

He looked away.

“You investigated me.”

“Yes.”

“You should stop.”

“I won’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily trusts you.”

Daniel looked at the little girl sitting in the back of Claire’s SUV.

She had managed to stand again.

Only for several seconds.

But she had stood.

Daniel walked toward her.

“Don’t try too hard.”

Lily smiled.

“I want to walk.”

“You will.”

“How do you know?”

Daniel knelt.

“Because you already proved you can.”

She held out her hand.

He took it.

Claire watched them.

Something about the moment felt strangely natural.

Then Lily said:

“Mom, can Daniel help me practice?”

Claire looked at Daniel.

He hesitated.

“Only if her doctor approves.”

Claire nodded.

That evening, Dr. Lewis evaluated Lily.

He was amazed.

Her muscle activation had increased.

Not dramatically.

But measurably.

“Whatever happened yesterday,” he said, “we shouldn’t ignore it.”

Claire asked:

“Could Daniel’s intervention have triggered something?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel stood quietly at the doorway.

Dr. Lewis looked at him.

“Are you trained in rehabilitation?”

“No.”

“Military?”

Daniel nodded.

“Then your understanding of body mechanics may have helped.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

He said nothing.

The next weeks became a routine.

Lily practiced standing.

Then shifting weight.

Then taking one step.

Daniel taught her balance without forcing her.

“Don’t fight your body,” he told her.

“Listen to it.”

Lily listened.

One morning, she took three steps.

Then five.

Then collapsed into Daniel’s arms.

She laughed.

Claire cried.

The progress wasn’t miraculous.

It was painful.

Slow.

Uncertain.

But real.

And while Lily improved, Daniel began receiving more threats.

A photograph arrived.

It showed Daniel during his military service.

On the back:

You cannot bury the past.

Daniel stared at it.

He knew that photograph.

Only a handful of people should have had access to it.

One name came to mind.

Commander Thomas Reed.

His former commanding officer.

A man Daniel believed had died two years earlier.

Then another envelope arrived.

Inside was a single sentence.

Ask Bennett International where the money went.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What?”

He handed her the note.

Her face changed.

“Bennett International?”

Daniel nodded.

“Someone believes your company is connected to my old operation.”
