Billionaire CEO Froze as Her Paralyzed Daughter Ran to a Single Dad—A Hidden Navy SEAL
Chapter 2
Claire didn’t move.
She had spent years being told she was fearless.
She wasn’t.
She was simply good at hiding fear.
But something about Daniel’s voice made her listen.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
His eyes remained on the men near the entrance.
One of them touched his ear.
Another looked toward Lily.
Daniel stepped closer to Claire.
“Your security team is watching the wrong door.”
Claire’s face tightened.
“How would you know that?”
“Because the man behind the kitchen entrance hasn’t moved in six minutes.”
Claire’s head turned slightly.
Her own security chief, Marcus, noticed.
He touched his earpiece.
“Kitchen entrance?”
A guard responded.
“We have nobody there.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Check again.”
Two guards moved.
Thirty seconds later, one shouted.
“Someone’s here!”
The ballroom erupted.
Guests ducked.
Claire pulled Lily toward her.
Daniel grabbed Evan’s hand.
“Stay close.”
A man appeared from the service corridor.
He wasn’t holding a weapon.
He was holding a camera.
Claire’s security team surrounded him.
The man dropped it.
“I’m press!”
Claire’s chief security officer looked at Daniel.
“How did you know?”
Daniel shrugged.
“Habit.”
“Habit from what?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Lily was still standing.
Barefoot.
Shaking.
But standing.
Claire knelt beside her.
“Can you move your legs?”
Lily nodded.
“It’s hard.”
“Does it hurt?”
“No.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
She pulled her daughter into her arms.
For three years she had imagined this moment.
But she had imagined it in a hospital room.
With doctors.
With therapists.
With cameras around a machine.
Not here.
Not because of a stranger.
Daniel quietly walked away.
Claire noticed.
“Wait.”
He stopped.
“Why?”
“You helped my daughter.”
“I caught her.”
“You did more than that.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“She did the hard part.”
Claire stood.
“Let me thank you.”
“No need.”
“Mr. Carter.”
He paused.
“Daniel.”
“Daniel.”
She extended her hand.
He shook it.
His grip was firm.
His eyes remained alert.
Claire looked at the little boy.
“Is he your son?”
“Yes.”
“What’s his name?”
“Evan.”
Evan smiled shyly.
Claire smiled back.
Then Lily spoke.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I want to see him again.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“So do I.”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he reached into his pocket and handed Claire a small card.
There was no company logo.
Only a phone number.
Claire glanced at it.
“You’re not going to tell me what you used to do?”
Daniel’s expression became guarded.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m trying to make sure my son grows up without knowing.”
Then he walked away.
Claire watched him leave.
She didn’t know what bothered her more.
The mysterious stranger.
Or the fact that some part of her already suspected he had saved her daughter for a reason.
