Billionaire Buys a Failing Farm in Secret, Then the Farmer’s Daughter Refuses His Only Offer

Chapter 5

Adrian moved quickly.

Security cameras went up around the property.

An agricultural engineer inspected the irrigation system.

A legal team reviewed the water rights.

But Emily remained suspicious.

“You can’t just spend money every time something goes wrong.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I can.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“What is?”

“You think money fixes everything.”

“No.”

He paused.

“That’s why I didn’t offer you more money.”

Emily studied him.

“You could.”

“Yes.”

“But you won’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you said no.”

She smiled.

“Still listening.”

“Apparently.”

They spent the next week working together.

The engineer discovered a buried diversion pipe.

It ran from the Carter irrigation channel toward land controlled by Martin Hale.

Emily stared at it.

“They built this underground.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“At least ten years.”

Adrian crouched beside the pipe.

“It’s still active.”

Water flowed through it.

Emily felt a surge of anger.

“All these years…”

Adrian stood.

“They wanted you to blame the weather.”

“They made us think we were failing.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled.

“My father thought he’d lost his touch.”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“He didn’t.”

They filed a formal complaint.

But the county moved slowly.

Martin had influence.

The local permitting office delayed inspections.

Then a judge rejected their emergency request.

Emily was furious.

“We have proof.”

Adrian nodded.

“We need more.”

“More?”

“Something impossible to dismiss.”

“What?”

“The original water map.”

“My father has it.”

They searched the farmhouse attic.

Boxes.

Old deeds.

Family photographs.

Finally, they found a rolled map behind a wooden chest.

Emily opened it.

The old water channel ran directly beneath the land now controlled by Martin.

But there was something else.

A handwritten note.

Property rights transferred to Claire Vale and Henry Carter jointly.

Emily stared.

“My mother owned half the water rights.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“She never sold them.”

“Then they were stolen.”

“Yes.”

The note had been signed by a county clerk.

The original transfer had never been legally completed.

Martin’s entire claim might be invalid.

Emily smiled.

“We can stop him.”

Adrian nodded.

Then a voice came from behind them.

“No.”

They turned.

Henry stood in the doorway.

He looked pale.

“Your mother didn’t die accidentally.”

Emily froze.

“What?”

Henry’s hands trembled.

Adrian stared.

“What are you saying?”

Henry swallowed.

“Claire was supposed to return.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“She found out about the water.”

Silence.

Henry continued.

“She discovered Martin had been manipulating the records.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“What happened?”

“She was threatened.”

“By Martin?”

“I don’t know.”

Emily stepped closer.

“Dad.”

Henry looked at her.

“The night before she died, Claire came here.”

Emily’s breath caught.

“She was going to tell me everything.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“She never got the chance.”

Adrian looked stunned.

“You’re saying my mother came here?”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“There was a car accident.”

Adrian stared at the floor.

“Who investigated?”

“The county sheriff.”

“Who was sheriff?”

Henry hesitated.

“Thomas Hale.”

Martin’s brother.

Emily’s blood ran cold.

“This isn’t just land.”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“This is about my mother.”

The old farmhouse suddenly felt smaller.

The past had come back.

And this time, Adrian wasn’t leaving.

Neither was Emily.
