Billionaire Buys a Failing Farm in Secret, Then the Farmer’s Daughter Refuses His Only Offer

Chapter 11

The corporation didn’t accept Adrian’s refusal.

They launched a campaign to discredit Carter Valley.

Articles appeared accusing the cooperative of environmental violations.

Anonymous complaints were filed.

Inspectors arrived.

Emily was exhausted.

“It’s endless.”

Adrian nodded.

“They’re trying to break us.”

“What do we do?”

“Document everything.”

They did.

Every inspection.

Every water reading.

Every financial transaction.

Every crop record.

The truth held.

The accusations collapsed.

Then Emily discovered something in the corporation’s environmental report.

They had been dumping waste upstream.

She stared at the data.

“They’re contaminating the water.”

Adrian called the authorities.

The investigation began.

The corporation’s executives were exposed.

The same company had been pressuring small farms to sell land for years.

Martin Hale had been one of their partners.

The larger conspiracy became clear.

Destroy water access.

Drive farmers into debt.

Acquire land cheaply.

Build industrial operations.

Carter Valley had survived because Adrian had intervened.

The story went national.

Farmers across the state joined the cooperative.

The company lost billions.

Adrian’s decision became a defining moment for his business.

But he didn’t care about the headlines.

One evening, he found Emily standing beside the river.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

She smiled.

“I was thinking about the first day.”

“The offer?”

“Yes.”

“You said no.”

“Immediately.”

“You regret it?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if I’d said yes, I might never have learned who you really were.”

He smiled.

“So refusing me saved us.”

“Maybe.”

He stepped closer.

“I still owe you something.”

“What?”

“The original offer.”

She laughed.

“You’re still thinking about that?”

“Yes.”

“What would you offer now?”

He pulled a small box from his jacket.

Emily stared.

“You cannot be serious.”

He opened it.

Inside was a simple ring.

Not enormous.

Not flashy.

Nothing like the jewelry billionaire families usually wore.

Just a small diamond set in gold.

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I told you I wasn’t selling.”

He laughed.

“Good.”

She looked at the ring.

“So what are you buying?”

“Nothing.”

He knelt.

“I’m asking.”

She covered her mouth.

“Adrian.”

“I know this isn’t how either of us expected our story to happen.”

“No.”

“But I don’t want the farm.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want your name.”

“You already have one.”

He smiled.

“I want your hand.”

She laughed through tears.

“You’re terrible at proposals.”

“Apparently.”

She knelt beside him.

“You’re supposed to wait for an answer.”

“I am.”

“Yes.”

His eyes widened.

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger.

She kissed him.

Behind them, Henry stood on the porch.

He applauded.

Emily burst out laughing.

Adrian looked over.

“How long have you been there?”

“Long enough.”

The three of them laughed.

The farm remained.

The family remained.

And the land that nearly disappeared became stronger than ever.
