Billionaire Buys a Failing Farm in Secret, Then the Farmer’s Daughter Refuses His Only Offer
Chapter 9
The board demanded Adrian sell the farm partnership.
He refused.
They threatened to remove him as CEO.
Adrian didn’t seem worried.
Emily was.
“You can’t lose your company because of us.”
“It’s not because of you.”
“It is.”
“No.”
“You’ve spent millions.”
“Money isn’t the issue.”
“What is?”
He looked at her.
“Doing something that matters.”
She didn’t know what to say.
Then Adrian’s chief financial officer called.
“There is another problem.”
“What?”
“Martin Hale’s shell company is connected to our investment portfolio.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“How?”
“They own debt tied to two of our major properties.”
Emily looked at him.
Martin wasn’t finished.
He had found another way into Adrian’s empire.
Adrian called his lawyers.
Within hours, they discovered that Martin had quietly acquired positions in several Blackwell-owned companies.
He was preparing a hostile takeover.
The old land war had become a corporate war.
Emily stared at the numbers.
“He’s trying to hurt you.”
“Yes.”
“Because of me?”
“Because of control.”
She shook her head.
“He wants revenge.”
“Probably.”
“What do we do?”
Adrian smiled.
“Same thing we’ve always done.”
“What?”
“Refuse to sell.”
She laughed.
They spent the next month fighting the takeover.
Adrian reorganized the debt.
Sold several nonessential properties.
Brought in independent investors.
And turned Carter Valley into a showcase project.
The farm became profitable.
Local farmers joined the cooperative.
Water returned to neighboring properties.
The community began recovering.
Martin’s leverage disappeared.
Then federal investigators released their report on Claire’s death.
Thomas Hale was charged.
Martin was charged with fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction.
The county clerk confessed.
For the first time, the truth became public.
Adrian attended the hearing.
Emily stayed beside him.
Afterward, they drove home.
Neither spoke for a while.
Finally, Adrian said,
“My mother got justice.”
Emily nodded.
“She did.”
“But I still wish she’d been here.”
“So do I.”
They reached the farm.
Adrian stopped the truck.
“Emily.”
“Yes?”
“I owe you an answer.”
“To what?”
“My only offer.”
She smiled.
“The one you made on the first day?”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“What was it really?”
“I wanted to buy the farm’s debt.”
“And?”
“I wanted to protect it.”
“Why?”
“Because it was my mother’s home.”
Emily smiled sadly.
“You could have told us.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of my father?”
“No.”
“Of what?”
“You.”
She laughed.
“Me?”
“I knew you’d say no.”
She looked at him.
“You were right.”
Adrian smiled.
“I was.”
He looked toward the farmhouse.
“But I have a different offer now.”
Emily’s smile faded.
“What?”
Adrian stepped out of the truck.
“Not for the farm.”
He walked around to her side.
“Not for the business.”
He took her hand.
“For a future.”
Emily stared at him.
“You mean…”
“Yes.”
“You’re asking me?”
“Yes.”
She didn’t answer immediately.
Adrian waited.
“I thought you said we shouldn’t rush.”
“We shouldn’t.”
“Then why ask now?”
“Because I don’t want to spend another year pretending I don’t feel this.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
She squeezed his hand.
“I feel it too.”
He smiled.
“But?”
She laughed.
“There is always a but.”
He waited.
“I need to know one thing.”
“What?”
“Would you still choose me if I had no farm?”
“Yes.”
“If I had no money?”
“Yes.”
“If I never became successful?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Then yes.”
Adrian pulled her into his arms.
For the first time, neither of them was thinking about land.
Or money.
Or family secrets.
Just each other.
But before they could kiss, Emily’s father called from the porch.
“Are you two coming inside?”
They froze.
Henry smiled.
“I’ve got dinner.”
Emily laughed.
Adrian whispered,
“Your father has excellent timing.”
“Welcome to family.”
