Billionaire Buys a Failing Farm in Secret, Then the Farmer’s Daughter Refuses His Only Offer
Chapter 4
Henry Carter stared at Adrian for almost a minute.
They stood on the farmhouse porch.
Emily watched from the doorway.
Finally Henry spoke.
“Claire’s boy.”
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.”
Henry’s eyes filled with tears.
“You look like her.”
Adrian swallowed.
“She told me about this place.”
Henry shook his head.
“She shouldn’t have left.”
“She didn’t want to.”
“You know that?”
“She wrote it.”
Henry sat heavily on the porch steps.
“I was angry.”
“At her?”
“At your grandfather.”
Adrian listened.
Henry told the story.
Claire had wanted to stay on the farm.
Her husband had wanted to leave.
They fought.
Eventually, Claire left with him.
She wrote letters.
Henry never answered.
Adrian stared at the ground.
“I thought she forgot us.”
“She didn’t.”
Henry looked up.
“Neither did I.”
The three of them stood together as the sun set.
For the first time, Adrian felt something he hadn’t expected.
Home.
But the moment didn’t last.
A truck arrived.
Martin Hale stepped out.
He was sixty years old.
Gray-haired.
Expensive suit.
Confident smile.
Emily immediately recognized him.
“You.”
Martin smiled.
“Emily.”
“What do you want?”
“To make another offer.”
Henry stood.
“We already refused.”
Martin looked at him.
“You may want to reconsider.”
Adrian stepped forward.
Martin’s expression changed.
“Mr. Vale.”
“You know me?”
“Everyone knows you.”
Adrian’s voice was cold.
“Then you know I don’t like wasting time.”
Martin smiled.
“Neither do I.”
He handed Emily a document.
“This is a final purchase proposal.”
Emily looked at the amount.
Her breath caught.
It was nearly three times the farm’s market value.
She looked at Adrian.
He said nothing.
Martin continued.
“Take the money. Pay the debts. Move somewhere comfortable.”
Emily handed the papers back.
“No.”
Martin smiled.
“You haven’t read the conditions.”
“I don’t need to.”
“This offer expires tomorrow.”
“Then tomorrow you can offer someone else.”
Martin’s eyes hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.”
Emily stepped closer.
“No. You’re making one.”
“What mistake?”
“You think we’re desperate.”
Martin said nothing.
“We may be broke,” she continued, “but we’re not stupid.”
Adrian almost smiled.
Martin walked away.
After he left, Emily turned toward Adrian.
“You knew he would come.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knows about the water.”
“And?”
“And he knows I’m helping you.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means he’ll try something else.”
That night, the first sign came.
The farm’s irrigation pump stopped.
Then another.
By morning, two tractors wouldn’t start.
A tire had been slashed.
The barn power was cut.
Emily stared at the damage.
“This isn’t random.”
Adrian nodded.
“No.”
“Then what?”
“A warning.”
Henry looked at him.
“Who are you bringing to my farm?”
Adrian answered,
“Someone who intends to keep it yours.”
Emily looked at him.
“You’re staying?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian met her eyes.
“Because you’re family.”
The word felt strange.
But not wrong.
And somewhere deep inside, Emily realized that the billionaire she had refused twice might be the first person who actually understood why her family couldn’t afford to lose the farm.
