Abandoned at 19, She Met the West’s Richest Cowboy—And He Refused to Let Her Go

Chapter 3

Three months passed.

Clara had become part of the ranch.

The workers liked her.

The horses trusted her.

Even Ethan’s old border collie followed her everywhere.

She had stopped talking about leaving.

But she hadn’t stopped thinking about her old life.

One afternoon, a black SUV arrived at the ranch.

Clara froze when she saw who stepped out.

Daniel.

Her former fiancé.

He walked toward the house wearing an expensive suit.

Ethan was outside.

He noticed Clara’s expression.

“Who is that?”

“My past.”

Daniel stopped in front of them.

“Clara.”

She looked at him.

“What are you doing here?”

“I came to talk.”

“You shouldn’t have.”

“I made a mistake.”

She laughed bitterly.

“A mistake?”

“I was under pressure.”

“You left me on the road.”

“I know.”

“You took the wedding money.”

“I’ll pay it back.”

“That isn’t the point.”

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“And you’re living with him?”

Ethan stepped forward.

“Careful.”

Daniel smiled.

“I’ve heard about you.”

“Then you’ve heard enough.”

Daniel turned back to Clara.

“You can’t stay here forever.”

Clara’s voice hardened.

“I can stay wherever I want.”

“You don’t belong in this world.”

She looked at Ethan.

Then back at Daniel.

“Maybe I finally found one where I do.”

Daniel’s face changed.

He walked away.

Clara stood silently.

Ethan waited.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“You want me to go after him?”

She almost smiled.

“No.”

“Good.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want you wasting another minute on someone who chose not to value you.”

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“You make it sound easy.”

“It isn’t.”

He sat beside her.

“I was betrayed too.”

She looked at him.

“By who?”

“My business partner.”

“What happened?”

“He took almost everything.”

“What did you do?”

“I started again.”

Clara nodded.

“That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Ethan smiled.

“Then do it.”

She leaned against the porch railing.

“Ethan?”

“Yes?”

“Why did you really stop that truck?”

He thought.

“Because I saw someone who needed a ride.”

“That simple?”

“Yes.”

Clara smiled.

“I don’t believe you.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

That night, the ranch felt different.

Not because anything had changed.

Because Clara realized she was no longer just staying there.

She was beginning to belong.
