Abandoned at 19, She Met the West’s Richest Cowboy—And He Refused to Let Her Go
Chapter 14
Twenty years after their first meeting, the ranch belonged to the next generation.
Grace was twenty-eight.
Clara was forty-eight.
Ethan was fifty.
The conservation trust remained untouched.
The ranch was stronger than ever.
The old highway was still there.
But Clara never looked at it with pain anymore.
One autumn morning, she and Ethan stood beside the gate.
“Remember?”
“Yes.”
“I had nineteen dollars.”
“And a wedding dress.”
She laughed.
“You remember that?”
“Everything.”
She looked at him.
“You never told me why you came back.”
“I saw you start walking.”
“And?”
“I didn’t like the idea of leaving you there.”
She smiled.
“You refused to let me go.”
He laughed.
“Not exactly.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“You came back.”
“Yes.”
“Twice.”
“Yes.”
“That counts.”
He smiled.
“Maybe.”
They hugged.
Behind them, Grace was helping her own young team restore a section of the ranch.
The future was already moving.
Ethan looked at her.
“We did okay.”
Clara smiled.
“We did.”
Then she corrected him.
“You did.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at the ranch.
“We did.”
