A WAITRESS FED THE SAME HOMELESS MAN EVERY NIGHT—ONE DAY, HE WALKED IN WEARING A SUIT

Chapter 3

Emma couldn’t sleep.

The next morning, she searched Harrison Capital online.

The company was enormous.

Investment banking.

Real estate.

Private equity.

Construction.

Its founder was Richard Harrison.

A billionaire.

His photograph appeared beside articles describing him as one of the city’s most successful businessmen.

Emma stared at the picture.

Then she noticed something.

The man’s face looked familiar.

Not because she had met him.

Because she had seen him in old newspaper clippings.

Emma searched further.

Richard Harrison had once had a business partner named David Hayes.

The partnership had ended twelve years earlier.

There were almost no details.

Then Emma found a scanned article.

Local Entrepreneur David Hayes Presumed Dead After Financial Scandal.

She read the article twice.

According to the story, Hayes had been accused of stealing millions from Harrison Capital.

He had disappeared before trial.

Emma closed the laptop.

David had been telling the truth.

Someone had taken his house.

Someone had taken his name.

And everyone believed he was dead.

That night, Emma found him waiting.

She carried the usual tray.

But this time, she sat down before he ate.

“I know.”

David looked at her.

“Know what?”

“Who you are.”

His expression changed.

“You shouldn’t have searched.”

“I was worried.”

“That can be dangerous.”

“So can being homeless for twelve years.”

David stared at her.

Then he sighed.

“My name is David Hayes.”

“I know.”

“I built Harrison Capital with Richard.”

“What happened?”

David looked toward the street.

“We created a company together. It grew quickly. Then Richard started moving money through companies neither of us controlled.”

“Why?”

“I confronted him.”

“And?”

“He framed me.”

Emma was silent.

“He created false accounts. False signatures. False witnesses.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”

“I did.”

David laughed bitterly.

“They had already been paid.”

Emma looked at him.

“How did you survive?”

“By disappearing.”

“Why stay homeless?”

“Because anyone who saw me could sell my location.”

Emma swallowed.

“Who is looking for you now?”

“Richard.”

“Why after twelve years?”

David looked at the restaurant.

“Because I recently found something.”

“What?”

“A ledger.”

Emma waited.

David’s voice dropped.

“Proof that Richard didn’t just steal from me.”

He looked at her.

“He stole from thousands of people.”

Emma frowned.

“How?”

“Through an investment fund called the Horizon Project.”

The wind moved through the trees.

David reached into his coat and removed a small photograph.

It showed dozens of people standing outside a building.

“Those people invested their savings.”

“What happened?”

“Richard promised them housing developments and retirement investments.”

Emma’s face tightened.

“And?”

“The money disappeared.”

She looked at him.

“Why haven’t you exposed him?”

David’s eyes hardened.

“Because the ledger isn’t enough.”

“What do you need?”

“Someone inside Harrison Capital.”

Emma thought about the business card.

Then she realized something.

“You’re planning to go back.”

David nodded.

“Not as a homeless man.”
