Daniel secretly contacted Emma that evening.
They met in a crowded coffee shop.
He brought a folder.
“I can’t keep working there.”
“What’s inside?”
“Copies of financial transfers.”
Emma opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Millions of dollars.
Transfers to shell companies.
Then the same names appeared repeatedly.
“What’s Horizon Project?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You know about that?”
“David told me.”
Daniel nodded.
“Horizon was supposed to finance affordable housing.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
“Where did the money go?”
Daniel pointed to the documents.
“Three companies.”
Emma read them.
All three were registered overseas.
“Who owns them?”
“We don’t know.”
“You must know.”
“We traced the payments to a private trust.”
“Whose trust?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“Richard Harrison’s family trust.”
Emma felt sick.
“Then why isn’t he arrested?”
“Because the trust has layers of shell companies and nominee directors.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“And because every time someone gets close, evidence disappears.”
Emma thought about David.
“Where is he now?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he tell you?”
Daniel shook his head.
“He said if anything happened to him, I should find you.”
Emma froze.
“Me?”
Daniel nodded.
“He said you were the only person outside the company he trusted.”
Emma stared at the folder.
“What did he expect me to do?”
“Help him expose Richard.”
Before Emma could respond, her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Silence.
Then David’s voice.
“Don’t trust Daniel.”
Emma looked at him.
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?”
The call ended.
Emma stood.
“You heard him.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know why he said that.”
A message arrived.
Come to the old train station. Alone.
Emma stared at the screen.
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t go.”
“You just told me David trusted me.”
“He may not be the one who sent that message.”
Emma looked at him.
“Then who did?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Outside the coffee shop, a black sedan was parked across the street.
Someone was watching them.
