A WAITRESS FED THE SAME HOMELESS MAN EVERY NIGHT—ONE DAY, HE WALKED IN WEARING A SUIT
Chapter 7
Emma didn’t go alone.
She called Paul.
Then she called Daniel.
Together they went to the old train station.
David was waiting beneath the broken clock.
He looked different.
Clean-shaven.
His hair was trimmed.
He wore a dark suit.
Emma barely recognized him.
She stopped.
“You look…”
“Different?”
“Yes.”
David smiled.
“That’s the idea.”
Daniel stared.
“You’re going back.”
“I already did.”
“To Harrison Capital?”
David nodded.
“Richard believes I’m dead.”
“Then why show yourself?”
“I haven’t.”
He pointed toward the suit.
“This belongs to someone else.”
Emma frowned.
David smiled.
“I’m attending Richard’s annual investor dinner tomorrow.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“How?”
“Through one of his partners.”
David handed Emma a folder.
Inside was an invitation.
She read the name.
Jonathan Hayes.
“Your brother?”
David shook his head.
“My son’s name.”
Emma looked up.
“You have a son?”
“I did.”
The sadness in his voice changed the room.
“What happened?”
“Richard used him against me.”
David explained.
His son had been nineteen when David disappeared.
Richard convinced him his father was a criminal.
The boy left the country.
They never reconciled.
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“London.”
Emma looked at the invitation.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because tomorrow I will confront Richard.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s suicide.”
“No.”
David’s eyes hardened.
“It’s the end of running.”
Emma asked:
“What is the real plan?”
David looked at her.
“The ledger is not the evidence.”
“What?”
“The ledger only shows the money.”
“Then what proves the fraud?”
“Witnesses.”
“How many?”
“Twenty-three.”
Emma stared.
“Where are they?”
“Scattered.”
“Can you bring them together?”
“I already have.”
David took out his phone.
A list appeared.
Retired employees.
Investors.
Accountants.
Former executives.
All connected to Horizon Project.
Emma understood.
“Tomorrow isn’t just an investor dinner.”
“No.”
David looked toward the dark station.
“It’s the night Richard Harrison loses everything.”
But before they could leave, Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“What’s wrong?”
Daniel lowered the phone.
“The witness list was stolen.”
