A Broke Waitress Inherited a $6 Train Depot — 12 Sealed Mail Cars Waited Behind the Wall
Chapter 6
They shut off their lights.
The footsteps became louder.
Mara and Eli crouched behind the first mail car.
A flashlight appeared in the darkness.
A man walked past.
He carried bolt cutters.
He stopped at Car 12.
Mara recognized him.
Thomas Whitmore.
The county development director.
Harold’s grandson.
Eli whispered:
“Don’t move.”
Thomas cut the old chain.
The door opened.
He climbed inside.
Mara waited.
Then she followed.
She found Thomas standing over a metal box.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
He spun around.
His face went pale.
“Mara.”
“What are you looking for?”
“Nothing.”
She laughed.
“You just broke into my property.”
He glanced toward the exit.
“The station isn’t yours.”
“The deed says otherwise.”
Thomas smiled.
“You don’t understand what you inherited.”
“Then explain it.”
He looked at her.
“Your grandfather should have destroyed those records.”
Mara felt cold.
“You knew him.”
“He made mistakes.”
“What happened to him?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“Some secrets are more valuable buried.”
He walked toward her.
Eli stepped between them.
“Back up.”
Thomas stared at him.
Then smiled.
“You two have no idea what you’re touching.”
He left.
Mara watched him disappear.
She looked at Car 12.
The door was open.
Inside was a single steel container.
No letters.
No bank records.
Just one red ledger.
She opened it.
Every page was filled with numbers.
Property addresses.
Names.
Payments.
Then one column made her blood freeze.
Disappearances.
Several names had dates.
Some had no dates at all.
Her grandfather’s name was at the bottom.
Beside it:
Problem unresolved.
