A Broke Waitress Inherited a $6 Train Depot — 12 Sealed Mail Cars Waited Behind the Wall
Chapter 9
Mara woke to the smell of smoke.
The depot was on fire.
She grabbed the emergency bag and ran.
Eli was already outside.
“The tunnel!”
They rushed toward it.
Smoke filled the underground chamber.
Mara looked toward Car 12.
The ledger was still inside.
“I can’t leave it.”
Eli grabbed her arm.
“You’re not going back.”
“Those records are everything.”
He looked at her.
“Then we’ll get them together.”
They entered the tunnel.
The fire had reached the wooden supports.
Mara reached Car 12.
The steel door was hot.
She opened it.
The red ledger was inside.
She grabbed it.
Then a beam collapsed behind them.
Eli pulled her toward the exit.
They barely escaped before the tunnel entrance collapsed.
Outside, the old depot burned.
Mara stood in the rain holding the ledger against her chest.
Everything she had inherited for six dollars was disappearing in flames.
She began to cry.
Then Sheriff Cole arrived.
He looked at the destroyed building.
“You were warned.”
Mara stared at him.
“No.”
She wiped her face.
“My grandfather was warned.”
She held up the ledger.
“And he still chose to leave the truth behind.”
The sheriff nodded.
“You have more courage than he did.”
Mara shook her head.
“He had to survive.”
She looked at the ruins.
“I don’t.”
The federal investigators arrived later that night.
The case became official.
And the old railway conspiracy finally began to unravel.
