A Broke Waitress Inherited a $6 Train Depot — 12 Sealed Mail Cars Waited Behind the Wall
Chapter 5
Mara and Eli spent the next week inside the underground chamber.
They worked at night.
The tunnel remained hidden from the town.
Every document was photographed.
Every envelope was cataloged.
One box contained old photographs.
In one, Mara’s grandfather stood beside the station superintendent.
In another, he stood with a group of county officials.
The final photograph made her stop.
A younger Samuel stood beside a man Mara recognized immediately.
Harold Whitmore.
One of the town’s wealthiest families.
The Whitmores owned farms, banks, and several commercial properties.
Harold’s grandson now served on the county development board.
Mara looked at the photo.
“Why was my grandfather with him?”
Eli studied it.
“Maybe they worked together.”
Mara shook her head.
“Then why was his name in the letter?”
Eli didn’t answer.
She opened another box.
Inside was a stack of bank records.
The numbers were enormous.
Loans.
Property transfers.
Insurance payments.
And hidden among them was a repeated transaction.
Payments to a private railway contractor.
Mara called an old archivist.
“Did the Whitmores own the railway?”
“No.”
“Did they have financial ties to it?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough to matter.”
Mara looked at the documents.
The railway had been used to move land deeds.
Property titles.
Financial records.
And maybe stolen assets.
Then she found a passenger list from 1986.
One name was circled in red.
Samuel Ellis.
Her grandfather.
Beside his name was a note.
Meeting at Depot. Midnight.
Mara stared.
The date was two weeks before the station was officially closed.
She looked toward Eli.
“This is why he gave me the station.”
Eli nodded.
“Because he couldn’t tell you.”
Mara looked at the tunnel.
“Why not?”
Before Eli could answer, they heard a sound.
Footsteps.
Someone was inside the tunnel.
