Single Dad Was Dared to Dance With the Cold CEO — Then She Whispered Something Unforgettable
Chapter 1
The dare was supposed to last thirty seconds.
That was all.
Thirty seconds on a dance floor with Victoria Sterling, the coldest CEO in the city.
For Daniel Hayes, it sounded like thirty seconds too many.
He stood near the back wall of the ballroom, holding a glass of sparkling water while the executives around him drank champagne and laughed too loudly.
He had only come because his company had organized the annual Sterling Logistics employee gala.
People like Daniel were usually invisible at events like this.
He was a warehouse operations supervisor.
He worked long shifts, handled shipping emergencies, fixed scheduling disasters, and went home to his eight-year-old daughter, Emma.
He had no interest in impressing billionaires.
Especially not Victoria Sterling.
Victoria stood on the other side of the ballroom in a black evening gown, surrounded by board members and investors.
She was thirty-four.
Beautiful.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
Employees said she had once fired an executive in the middle of a meeting because he lied to her.
Others said she hadn’t smiled in five years.
Daniel didn’t know which stories were true.
He only knew one thing.
She had never looked at him.
Until tonight.
“Come on, Daniel!”
He turned.
Three of his coworkers were laughing.
“What?”
“You’ve been challenged.”
Daniel frowned.
“Challenged to what?”
His friend Marcus pointed at the dance floor.
Someone had apparently started a ridiculous game where employees dared one another to dance with senior executives.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Oh, come on.”
“Absolutely not.”
His coworkers laughed.
“Thirty seconds.”
“I have a daughter waiting for me at home.”
“Your daughter isn’t here.”
“Exactly.”
Then somebody shouted loudly enough for half the room to hear.
“Daniel says he’s too scared to dance with the CEO!”
The laughter spread.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Great.
He looked toward Victoria.
To his surprise, she was already watching him.
Their eyes met.
Her expression gave away nothing.
Then she walked toward him.
The room became strangely quiet.
Victoria stopped in front of Daniel.
“I hear you’re afraid of me.”
Daniel swallowed.
“That’s not what I said.”
“Then dance with me.”
He blinked.
“You’re serious?”
“Thirty seconds.”
A few employees began counting.
Daniel gave a helpless smile.
“Fine.”
Victoria extended her hand.
Daniel took it.
The moment they stepped onto the floor, the music slowed.
Her hand rested against his shoulder.
His hand settled carefully at her waist.
She smelled faintly of jasmine.
Daniel suddenly forgot every reasonable thought he’d had about leaving early.
Victoria looked directly into his eyes.
“You look nervous.”
“You’re the CEO.”
“And you’re the man who told the warehouse director he was wrong in front of two hundred employees.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
“He was wrong.”
For the first time, something almost like amusement touched her eyes.
The music continued.
Ten seconds.
Twenty.
Then Victoria moved closer.
Her lips nearly touched his ear.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Don’t trust the man standing behind you.”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
He glanced over Victoria’s shoulder.
A senior executive named Richard Cole was standing only a few feet away.
And Richard was watching them.
Not smiling.
Not dancing.
Just staring.
Victoria pulled back as the thirty seconds ended.
The room applauded.
She released Daniel’s hand.
Then whispered one final sentence before walking away.
“Come to my office Monday morning. Alone.”
Daniel stood frozen on the dance floor.
He had no idea why the CEO had just warned him.
He had no idea why she had chosen him.
And he had no idea that by Monday morning, his life was about to change forever.
