Billionaire Dad Pretended To Be Sick To Test His Son’s Caregiver, Her Reaction Stunned Him
Chapter 1
The billionaire expected the caregiver to panic when she saw him collapse.
Instead, she walked past him.
Not because she was heartless.
Because she knew he wasn’t sick.
Marcus Sterling lay motionless on the marble floor of his bedroom, one hand pressed against his chest, his breathing deliberately shallow.
Behind the half-closed bathroom door, his son Daniel watched through the narrow gap.
“Dad?”
Daniel’s voice trembled.
Marcus didn’t move.
“Dad, please wake up.”
Daniel stepped into the bedroom.
His father had planned this moment carefully.
For three months, Daniel had been telling him that their new caregiver, Elena Brooks, was only pretending to care about the family.
She had been hired to look after Daniel’s eight-year-old son, Noah, after the boy’s mother died.
Daniel believed Elena was kind only because she wanted the family’s money.
Marcus wasn’t convinced.
So they had created a test.
Marcus would pretend to suffer a sudden medical emergency.
Daniel would secretly observe Elena’s reaction.
If she called emergency services immediately, Marcus would consider her trustworthy.
If she ignored him, she would be fired.
Simple.
Except Elena didn’t do either.
She walked into the bedroom carrying a glass of water.
She looked at Marcus.
Then at Daniel.
Then she said quietly:
“Mr. Sterling, stop pretending.”
Marcus opened his eyes.
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Elena put the glass down.
“You aren’t having a heart attack.”
Marcus slowly sat up.
“How did you know?”
She pointed toward his hand.
“Your fingers are steady.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that prove?”
“When someone is genuinely struggling to breathe, their body doesn’t usually stay that controlled.”
Marcus stared at her.
She continued.
“And you stopped breathing every time you heard your son move.”
Daniel’s face turned red.
“You were watching me?”
“I was watching him.”
She nodded toward Marcus.
“He wanted to know whether I’d care.”
Marcus stood.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Elena did something neither man expected.
She walked toward the door.
“Where are you going?” Marcus asked.
“To check on Noah.”
“That’s it?”
She turned.
“You hired me to care for a child.”
Her voice remained calm.
“Not to prove something to two grown men who don’t trust people.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Wait.”
Elena shook her head.
“You should be careful with tests like this.”
Marcus frowned.
“Why?”
“Because sometimes you don’t discover whether someone cares about you.”
She looked at him.
“You discover what kind of person you become when you think nobody is watching.”
Then she left.
Marcus stared at the closed door.
For the first time, his carefully designed test had backfired.
But neither he nor Daniel knew that Elena had recognized the signs of a medical emergency because she had once watched someone she loved die while other people hesitated.
And she had made herself a promise that night.
She would never hesitate again.
