The Billionaire Helped a Pregnant Stranger — Unaware She Would Become His Greatest Love
Chapter 1
The first time Ethan Cole saw the pregnant woman, she was standing alone in the rain outside a closed bus station.
It was 10:42 p.m.
The city was almost empty.
Most people had already gone home.
Ethan was driving back from a charity dinner when he noticed her beneath the weak glow of a streetlamp.
She was heavily pregnant.
Maybe eight months.
Maybe more.
One hand rested on the curve of her stomach.
The other held a small suitcase with one broken wheel.
She looked exhausted.
Ethan slowed his black sedan.
He normally would have kept driving.
He had learned to avoid getting involved in strangers’ problems.
Not because he was heartless.
Because every time people recognized Ethan Cole, the situation became complicated.
At thirty-six, Ethan was one of the city’s wealthiest businessmen.
He owned logistics companies, apartment buildings, hotels, and several investment firms.
People assumed he lived an easy life.
They didn’t know how lonely it was.
Most people who approached him wanted something.
Money.
Connections.
A job.
A favor.
Sometimes all three.
But the woman beneath the streetlamp wasn’t looking at his car.
She was looking at the closed bus station.
As if hoping it would somehow reopen.
Ethan pulled over.
He lowered the window.
“Are you okay?”
The woman startled.
She looked at him cautiously.
“Yes.”
Ethan glanced at the dark station.
“There’s no bus coming.”
“I know.”
“Do you have somewhere to go?”
She hesitated.
“Yes.”
Her answer came too quickly.
Ethan noticed.
“Do you need a ride?”
“No.”
“It’s raining.”
“I can walk.”
She looked at the suitcase.
Ethan looked at it too.
One wheel was hanging sideways.
“You’re not walking anywhere with that.”
A faint smile appeared.
“I’ve walked farther.”
He stepped out.
“Let me help.”
“No.”
She immediately backed away.
Ethan stopped.
He understood.
Fear.
She wasn’t afraid of the rain.
She was afraid of him.
So he stepped back.
“Okay.”
He pointed toward the hotel across the street.
“There’s a twenty-four-hour lobby over there.”
“I can’t afford a room.”
“You don’t have to.”
She stared at him.
“I’ll call you a cab.”
“I can’t pay for one.”
“I know.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Why would you do that?”
Ethan thought about it.
He didn’t have a perfect answer.
“Because you’re pregnant and standing alone in the rain.”
She looked down at her stomach.
Then at him.
Her expression softened.
“My name is Claire.”
“Ethan.”
She hesitated.
“Ethan what?”
“Cole.”
Her eyes widened.
She recognized the name.
“You’re…”
“Yes.”
“You own Cole Logistics.”
“Yes.”
Claire took a step backward.
“I shouldn’t have stopped you.”
“You didn’t.”
“I don’t want your money.”
“I didn’t offer you money.”
“You were going to.”
“Actually, I was going to offer you a ride.”
She looked at him suspiciously.
Then suddenly grabbed her stomach.
Her face tightened.
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Are you okay?”
She breathed slowly.
“Yes.”
“Are you having contractions?”
“I don’t know.”
Another wave of pain crossed her face.
Ethan moved closer.
“Hospital.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t have insurance.”
“I didn’t ask.”
She shook her head.
“I can’t go.”
“Why?”
She looked toward the dark road.
Then whispered,
“Because if they find me, I don’t know what they’ll do.”
Ethan froze.
“Who?”
Claire didn’t answer.
Rain poured around them.
For several seconds, the only sound was water hitting the pavement.
Then Ethan made a decision.
“Get in the car.”
“I can’t.”
“You can.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know you.”
“You know my name.”
“That isn’t enough.”
Ethan looked at her.
“No.”
“It isn’t.”
He removed his coat and placed it over the suitcase.
Then he stepped back.
“You can sit in the back seat with the door unlocked.”
Claire looked surprised.
“You don’t have to talk to me.”
She looked at the hotel.
Then at the car.
Finally, she nodded.
Ethan opened the rear door.
Claire climbed inside.
He loaded her suitcase.
Then he got into the driver’s seat.
As he pulled away from the station, he glanced in the mirror.
Claire was holding her stomach.
Her eyes were closed.
“Where should I take you?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered,
“I don’t know.”
Ethan looked at the road.
For some reason, those three words affected him more than they should have.
“I know somewhere safe.”
He had no idea that the woman in his back seat would soon become the most important person in his life.
And he had no idea that the child she was carrying was connected to a secret that could destroy both of their futures.
