“You’ve Been Staring Since the Airport,” the CEO Said — The Single Dad Smiled, “You’ve Been Letting Me”

Chapter 1

Liam Carter noticed the woman before he knew her name.

It happened at Chicago O’Hare, beneath a giant departure board where thousands of people were rushing in every direction.

Liam was traveling with his seven-year-old daughter, Sophie.

They were supposed to be flying to Denver for a three-day visit with Liam’s younger sister.

Instead, their flight had been delayed twice.

Sophie was bored.

Liam was exhausted.

And the woman standing twenty feet away had somehow become impossible to ignore.

She was tall, elegant, and dressed in a dark navy suit.

Not flashy.

Not overly expensive.

Just perfectly tailored.

She held her phone in one hand and a leather folder in the other.

Her expression was focused.

Serious.

Every few minutes, someone approached her.

An assistant.

A security guard.

A business associate.

She responded with short answers and returned to her phone.

Liam looked away.

Then looked again.

He wasn’t trying to stare.

He simply couldn’t help noticing her.

His daughter noticed too.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what?”

“Looking at that lady.”

Liam lowered his voice.

“Keep your voice down.”

Sophie grinned.

“Why?”

“Because it’s rude.”

“You’ve looked like six times.”

“Go read your book.”

She smiled and returned to her seat.

Across the terminal, the woman looked up.

Their eyes met.

Liam immediately looked away.

Five minutes later, she walked past them.

She stopped.

“Excuse me.”

Liam looked up.

“Yes?”

She looked at him.

“You’ve been staring since the airport.”

His face turned red.

Sophie nearly burst out laughing.

Liam cleared his throat.

“I’m sorry.”

The woman raised an eyebrow.

“Are you?”

He smiled awkwardly.

“I was trying not to.”

That surprised her.

Then Liam added:

“You’ve been letting me.”

She stared at him.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then the corner of her mouth lifted.

“Fair.”

Sophie covered her smile.

The woman looked at her.

“Your daughter?”

Liam nodded.

“Sophie.”

“She’s adorable.”

“Thank you.”

The woman glanced at the departure board.

“Your flight to Denver?”

Liam nodded.

“Delayed.”

“Mine too.”

Liam looked at her.

“Business trip?”

“Always.”

She walked away.

Sophie leaned toward him.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“She likes you.”

“She’s being polite.”

“No.”

“Sophie.”

“She smiled.”

Liam laughed.

“Go read.”

But he watched the woman disappear into the crowd.

Her name was Victoria Sterling.

Liam didn’t know that yet.

He also didn’t know she was the CEO of Sterling Global Holdings.

A company worth billions.

A woman whose name appeared in financial magazines.

A woman famous for making decisions without hesitation.

But Victoria had noticed something about Liam.

He wasn’t staring because she was famous.

He didn’t know who she was.

He had simply noticed her.

That was rare.

Most men who approached Victoria wanted something.

An introduction.

An investment.

A contract.

A photograph.

Liam hadn’t approached her at all.

He had looked.

Then apologized.

Then joked.

Nothing else.

The boarding announcement finally came.

Liam helped Sophie with her bag.

They walked toward the gate.

Victoria watched from behind.

She didn’t know why she was still looking.

Maybe because the single father seemed tired.

Not performatively tired.

Real tired.

His daughter held his hand.

He carried two bags.

A backpack.

And a stuffed rabbit.

He looked like a man who had built his world around one child.

She understood that more than she expected.

Victoria had no children.

She had spent most of her life building Sterling Global.

Her father had taught her that weakness was expensive.

She had believed him.

Until her husband died.

Then she believed nothing was safe.

She became harder.

More focused.

More successful.

But success hadn’t made her feel less lonely.

The flight boarded.

Liam and Sophie sat near the front.

Victoria was in first class.

Before the doors closed, she looked toward him.

Liam looked back.

This time, he smiled.

She smiled too.

Neither expected to see the other again.

But three hours later, when they landed in Denver, their paths crossed once more.

And this time, the meeting would be much harder to dismiss.
