“You’ve Been Staring Since the Airport,” the CEO Said — The Single Dad Smiled, “You’ve Been Letting Me”
Chapter 13
When Liam turned sixty, Victoria organized a surprise party.
He hated surprises.
She ignored that.
Family came.
Employees.
Friends.
Old colleagues.
Sophie gave a speech.
She talked about how Liam had taught her that love meant showing up.
Victoria spoke too.
She said:
“He noticed me before he knew anything about me.”
“That is rarer than people understand.”
“He didn’t see the CEO.”
“He saw a woman standing in an airport.”
Liam smiled.
She continued:
“Then he kept looking.”
The room laughed.
“Fortunately, I let him.”
Liam stood.
“I’d like to thank the woman who allowed the staring.”
Everyone laughed.
He took her hand.
“I thought she was beautiful.”
“Then I thought she was kind.”
“Then I thought she was strong.”
“Then I realized she didn’t have to be any of those things around me.”
“She could simply be herself.”
Victoria cried.
That was their marriage.
Not perfection.
Permission.
Permission to rest.
To grieve.
To fail.
To laugh.
To be ordinary.
They had begun as two strangers crossing paths.
They became partners.
Then spouses.
Then parents.
Then grandparents.
The journey mattered more than the destination.
