“You Don’t Fit My World Anymore” — He Divorced His Billionaire Wife on a $41 Cab Fare. She Owned…

Chapter 5

Daniel stayed late at the office that evening.

He couldn’t stop thinking about Richard Mercer.

The man who had trained him.

The man he had trusted.

The man he now learned had been Mia’s father.

At midnight, Daniel found an old digital archive.

He searched through files connected to Richard’s final year.

Most were restricted.

One folder was missing.

Daniel tried to access it.

Denied.

He tried again.

Denied.

Then someone spoke behind him.

“You shouldn’t be looking at that.”

Daniel turned.

Alex Reed stood in the doorway.

“I know who owns this company now.”

Alex nodded.

“I figured.”

“Did you know Mia was Richard’s daughter?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Seven years.”

Daniel stared.

“Everyone knew except me?”

“Not everyone.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Alex’s expression hardened.

“Because Mia asked me not to.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

Alex stepped inside.

“She wanted to know whether you loved her or the life around her.”

“And?”

Alex looked directly at him.

“You already know the answer.”

Daniel felt humiliated.

But Alex wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else.”

He closed the door.

“Richard believed someone inside the company was helping the person who poisoned him.”

“Who?”

“We never found out.”

“Does Mia know?”

“She suspects.”

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Why would someone want him dead?”

“His inheritance structure.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“What was in it?”

Alex hesitated.

“Not just money.”

He took out a small envelope.

“Richard created a private ownership mechanism. If he died, control would transfer to Mia only after certain conditions were met.”

Daniel opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

One sentence.

The person who truly loves my daughter will protect her even when there is nothing left to gain.

Daniel stared at the words.

“Why give this to me?”

“Because Mia asked me to.”

“Why?”

Alex’s eyes softened.

“She hasn’t completely stopped loving you.”

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

“Mia divorced you.”

“She did.”

“That doesn’t mean she stopped caring.”

Daniel’s heart pounded.

Then Alex handed him another document.

A bank transfer record.

Daniel read the name.

His own.

His account had received a large transfer six months earlier.

He frowned.

“I never got this.”

“Look at the source.”

He did.

Hawthorne Family Trust.

Amount:

$500,000.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“I didn’t know about this.”

“Exactly.”

Alex watched him carefully.

“Your wife had been quietly paying your mother’s medical bills.”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

“She never told you.”

“Why?”

“Because she didn’t want you to think she was buying your loyalty.”

Daniel sat down.

Suddenly, the forty-one-dollar cab ride felt pathetic.

He had accused the woman who had supported his family of making him feel small.

Without ever knowing what she had done for him.

But there was still one question.

Why had Mia wanted him to discover it now?
