Evelyn couldn’t move.
“My father died before Emma was born.”
Her mother shook her head.

Daniel looked at her.
“You said Richard was involved?”
“He was.”
“How?”
Her mother sighed.
“Your father built the company.”
“I know.”
“He also built the network around it.”
“The shell companies.”
“The private security teams.”
“The hidden accounts.”
Evelyn felt sick.
“And Thomas?”
“Thomas tried to expose him.”
“Then why did Thomas work with him?”
“Because he loved you.”
Her mother looked at Evelyn.
“Your father threatened to kill you if Thomas spoke.”
Evelyn covered her face.
Daniel stood silently.
Then her mother turned toward him.
“You were there too.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“You were part of the team Thomas trusted.”
“Yes.”
“You helped move Emma.”
He nodded.
Evelyn turned.
“What does that mean?”

“Why?”
“Because she was the heir.”
Evelyn frowned.
“She was a baby.”

Her mother explained.

“Where are you?”

“Emma.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“For what?”
“Bring me the trust documents.”
“And if I don’t?”
“I’ll take Emma myself.”
The line ended.
Evelyn stared at her phone.
Daniel asked,
“Where is the trust?”
“I don’t know.”
Her mother said quietly,
“The original is under the old Sterling chapel.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your family chapel?”
“Yes.”
“Why there?”
“Your father believed nobody would search a place tied to his own family.”
They left immediately.
The chapel was abandoned.
Rain pounded the roof.
Daniel found a loose stone behind the altar.
Underneath was a steel box.
Inside:
Trust documents.
Original company shares.
And a letter.
From Thomas.
Evelyn opened it.

She cried.

Then the final paragraph:
