Two guns. One bounty. And a man who had been hunting the wrong enemy for fifteen years.

CHAPTER 12

The canyon became silent.

Clay looked at Thomas.

“What did he mean?”

Thomas didn’t answer.

Scott raised his gun.

“Thomas.”

Thomas slowly looked at him.

“I didn’t plan Red Creek.”

“Then why did he say you did?”

Thomas stared at Harrow.

“Because he’s trying to divide us.”

Harrow laughed.

“You still believe him?”

Clay stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.”

Thomas sighed.

“I knew the payroll was going to be stolen.”

Scott stared.

“You knew?”

“I tried to stop it.”

“But you failed.”

“Yes.”

Harrow interrupted.

“Thomas helped me.”

Thomas turned.

“I worked for you for three months.”

Clay’s face hardened.

“Why?”

“To get close enough to destroy you.”

Harrow smiled.

“And you failed.”

Thomas looked at him.

“No.”

He pulled the ledger from inside his coat.

“I didn’t.”

He threw it toward Clay.

Clay caught it.

Harrow suddenly drew.

Scott fired.

Harrow’s bullet struck Thomas.

Thomas fell.

Clay fired back.

Harrow dropped.

Silence.

Scott ran to Thomas.

Blood covered his shirt.

Thomas looked at him.

“Your son.”

Scott knelt beside him.

“I know.”

“He deserved better.”

Scott nodded.

Thomas looked toward Clay.

“Your father wasn’t a hero.”

Clay swallowed.

“I know.”

“But he tried.”

Thomas smiled.

“That’s more than most men.”

His eyes closed.

Scott shook his shoulder.

“Thomas.”

No answer.

The man they had hunted for fifteen years was gone.

Harrow was dead.

The ledger remained.

The truth would finally reach the world.

Scott stood.

Clay looked at him.

“It’s over.”

Scott stared at Thomas’s body.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It’s finally finished.”
